Democrat Dismisses Claims that Floods Are Politically Motivated

A Democrat deputy spokesperson snubs claims by a Pheu Thai MP that the floods are the handiwork of a political group that wants to topple the government.

He regards the remarks as far-fetched and says they are intended to deviate public attention from the government's inability to respond to the floods.

Deputy Spokesperson for the Democrat Party Atthaporn Polabutr reacted to remarks made by Pheu Thai Party list MP and key red-shirt leader Jatuporn Phromphan that the current flood crisis is actually caused by a group of people who want to overthrow the government.

He believes Jatuporn wants to draw public attention away from the government's failure in its flood response.

Atthaporn said Jatuporn's remarks also correspond with reports broadcasted by the red-shirt group's community radio stations, which are attempting to find a scapegoat for the flood problems.

He questions why the prime minister is letting Jatuporn and the red-shirt group stir up conflict despite her call for cooperation from all sides to help solve the flood problems.

(Cosscomment - because any distraction is welcome at this time, instead of fighting the floods, fight for political survival seems to be the go)

Yingluck declines to declare state of emergency for fear of affecting confidence

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Friday that she declined to declare the state of emergency for fear that it would affect confidence of foreign investors.

She said all government agencies could still coordinate efforts to tackle the flood crisis without the need to enforce the emergency decree.

She said the government also received full cooperation from the armed forces to handle the flooding.

"I am not certain whether the declaration of state of emergency would improve the situation," Yingluck said.

Disaster warning issued for Bangkok

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Friday issued the disaster warning for Bangkok, consolidating power for flood control and drainage.

Yingluck invoked the 2007 Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Act to oversee flood control in lieu of declaring the state of emergency.

Under her instruction, the topmost priority for flood control is to speed up the drainage of run-off into the sea via East Bangkok.

The government is to coordinate with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to operate all sluice gates in the capital in order to rein in the water flow.

The armed forces would be in charge of maintaining and defending the royal-initated dykes and levees.

The military would also be responsible for protecting key installations, including the Grand Palace, Siriraj Hospital, the tap water system, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports.

The Transport Ministry would take charge of ensuring road traffic in the capital.

Relevant agencies would map out plans for evacuation and setting up shelters.

(Cosscomment - but no state of emergency, because not enough money is being lost yet, when Takky really starts losing money, then there'll be the state of emergency to end them all )
