There are some Japanese working for the high class escort agencies and in the exclusive Japanese clubs, don't think you would ever find them in any of the famous windows. The dutch government want all the non nationals out of the city's red light business, not sure though if that is still happening.

Japanese prostitution is legal and has been right back to the Meji restoration, in 1868. Have just written a paper on this for my Japanese unit in university if you want any more info I have it all...........most people you speak to will deny it but the fact is that one of the biggest industries in Japan is the 'sex' business, which covers everything from the hostess bars to what they call the water/pink trade which means sex.

And if your next questio is about rights then I do not know the answer to that one.............

GTG,

yes and no. Prostitution is semi legal in Japan. The post WWII constitution (written by Japanese with American guidance) prohibited prostitution. But similar to Thailand prostitution was tolerated and anti prostitution laws were never enforced.

As Uniformguy mentioned already the sex industry is a huge business mainly controlled by the YAKUZA. Police tolerates this because they keep drugs out of this business as much as possible. Prostitution has a long history in Japan and prostitutes are widely accepted in Japanese society.

Comparable to Thailand - maybe the Philippines. I do not know much about their 'Sex Industry'. What I've seen there was not exactly my taste. It's easy to communicate with the girls 'cause they all speak English but other than that I did not enjoy it nearly as much as in Thaild. Other than the Philippines there is an important 'Sex Industry' in Korea as well. But similar to Japan it's pretty expensive over there.

Sex Industry? If that means infrastructure where the industry is substantial and rather permanently ensconsed by virtue of bars, clubs, houses, rather than freelancers, etc....

BTW: My favorite comment was written in a travel book some years back about Western Samoa which said: "There is no prostitution in Western Samoa because there are so many enthusiastic amatuers.

I would add to the list:

Japan

Korea

Prague

Costa Rica

Honorable Mentions:

Dominican Republic

Brazil (Rio)

I would agree with Jp1 that there are extensive industries in your country Japan, Korea, Phillipines, also Cambodia if you read www.penhball.com it has pictures and lots of info on the growing scene in Cambodia. But there are also extensive and legal prostitutes in Germany, Holland, the Czech Republic, and Cuba. In fact my home country Ireland is probably one of the few countries where it is not tolerated at all and even lap dancing clubs were closed down. But it is 95% catholic!!!! and why I am in OZ at the moment.

May I ask why you are so interested in this subject. I will try and send you my paper but it is an undergrad paper and my first attempt so don't flame me for its quality..............it is more to do with the issues between Japan and Korea over the Comfort women issue but if you want it I will send it.

Thanks a lot for the info.

Ireland: It is understandable being a Catholic country. Buddhism doesn't state directly that prostitution is morally wrong, if I'm not mistaken. It is only wrong when a husband have sex with other people's wife and vice versa. So, a husband having a mia noi is not wrong if tha mia noi is unattached but a girl being a mia noi is wrong because the man has already a wife. I'm not sure about this but I think I 've got a lot of it correct.

Your paper: Don't worry, the subject of comfort women is fascinating enough ! I've read that when a Japanese soldier was going to have sex with these women he would said to his friends that he was going to a toilet. It reminds me of this story everytime some one on the board mention women is like toilet.

Please send the paper to me.

Well said that is what really pisses me off about Ireland. Two years ago there was a thriving underground industry of massage places which I used to enjoy. Western prices but you did meet a mix of girls mostly coming over from London for 2/3 weeks at a time. I even met a Japanese girl and some Thai girls working in London in Dublin. Then someone in authority found all the ads in a Whats On magazine and banned the ads, and then they closed down all of the massage places. There is of course still a scene in Dublin but it is all on the net now, I think it is irelandescorts.com or something like that but the prices are ridiculous,so I keep my money for Thailand.

I will send the paper as soon as I get it back as the copy saved on the net is incomplete.
