Once the only real bread winner in the family, the father, split with the kid I could easily see economic and social reasons for the mother to return home to her family. Often it is a binational marriage and one of the partners kidnaps the kid and brings it to his/hers home country. These Stories usually become very difficult if the partner is moving to the middle east or so, since the legal systems as well traditions in regard to who should control a family are different...
