radioman
It's a big part of what puts the terror in terrorism. Killing people is only a part of the plan, the impact on the living is more important. Any changes in security, or the approach to security, any additional powers for security agencies that in any way restrict or limit the individuals freedoms in any way and the terrorists have won, at least it's a big part of what they want to achieve. By scaring individuals away from acting freely and without concern, by taking away the safety blanket that says they don't really need to think twice about security from such threats, by scaring the authorities into spending more and doing more that impacts on the way people freely and without concern go about their daily lives, by knowing that an assorted group of commentators from the constant barrage of CNN style minutiae 'reporting' to the wacko's and nut jobs with their conspiracy theories will create a discussion table within the gen pop, this is the real terrorism. Flashermac
They are after the bastards right now. One good guy down though, another seriously wounded. << 9.47am BST The police officer said they pursued the suspects into a residential neighbourhood in Watertown, where there was an exchange of gunfire with the suspects, who were in an SUV. During the course of the pursuit, several explosive devices were discharged from the car towards officers, he said. During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was "struck" and taken into custody. A second suspect fled from the car and is being sought at the moment. A police officer was also struck and is in hospital in critical condition. Police from Boston, Massachusetts and Watertown are seeking the other suspect. He told residents not to leave their homes. If they see something suspicious, they should call 911 immediately. He warns motorists not to stop for anyone or pick up anyone at the side of the road. He said they are looking for "Suspect No 2, the white-capped individual who was involved in Monday's bombing of the Boston Marathon". He is dressed in a grey, hoodie-type sweatshirt. He is a light-skinned, Caucasian male with longer brown curly hair. Suspect No 1 was shot, he said. There is an active search going on. He should be considered armed and dangerous and is a threat to anyone who might approach him, the policeman said. Watertown Police Chief Ed Deveau called on Watertown to be calm at this time. He said the area affected was east Watertown: "Dexter, Laurel Street, School Street area". That's where people should remain in their homes, Deveau said. The first policeman said there were no planned controlled blasts at this time. Teams were recovering devices from the suspects' vehicles and making them safe. "Some went off. Some, we believe did not." He said he would not identify either of the suspects. Boston police commissioner Edward Davies said of Suspect 2: "We believe this to be a terrorist. We believe this to be a man who has come here to kill people. We need to get him in custody ... "There have been two police officers, one killed, one badly injured tonight ... This is a terrible tragedy. We don't want to increase it. We want to be very careful of what we do here." >> http://www.guardian....-dead-watertown
Flashermac
<< 10.01am BST Summary Ed Pilkington has just been in touch from Watertown. To summarise what we know so far: • Police have confirmed that they are carrying out an ongoing manhunt for one of the two suspects in the Boston marathon bombing, and have sealed off a 20-block radius of a suburb of the city where the suspect is believed to be holed up. • Ed Davis, the police commissioner of Boston, confirmed that they were trying to apprehend a man identified on Thursday night as Suspect Two. He was captured in video footage released to the public carrying a black backpack amid the marathon crowd shortly before the bombings and wearing a white baseball cap. • Suspect Two was believed to be hiding somewhere within the Watertown area, at the end of a dramatic police chase in which explosive devices were thrown out of a Mercedes SUV that had been car-jacked from MIT. The police have confirmed that in the course of the night one MIT officer was killed and another officer injured. • During the car chase, one of the two assailants - who police said was Suspect One from the marathon bombing photographs - was injured and later died at Beth Israel hospital. • Watertown residents within the 20-block radius have been told to stay in their homes. They have also been told not to offer a lift to anyone in the streets in the vicinity of the area. • Suspect Two is “considered armed and extremely dangerousâ€, Colonel Timothy Alben, head of Massachusetts state police, said. Davis had the following advice for Watertown residents: “Do not open your doors. Stay in your home. We believe this man to be a terrorist and we need to get him into custody.†• Alben said Suspect Two was dressed in a grey, hoodie-type sweatshirt. He is a light-skinned, Caucasian male with longer brown curly hair. >>
