A 17-year-old boy who was lying down on a Christchurch road was killed when he was hit by a car early today.

The incident happened on North Brook Road on the outskirts of Rangiora, about 3.40am, acting Inspector John Robinson said.

Initial enquiries indicated the man had been lying on the road at the time he was struck by a four-wheel drive vehicle, travelling towards Woodend, said Senior Sergeant Malcolm Johnston of Rangiora Police.

"It appears the driver of the vehicle simply did not see the man, who was wearing dark clothing, lying on the road.
