Police seek warrants for duo behind palace attack

Arrest warrants will soon be obtained for two suspects believed to be behind a grenade attack on Bangkok's Suan Pakkad Palace - a property associated with Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, who is also deputy Democrat leader.

The attack, which took place at around 21.44pm on Thursday night, hurt nobody but damaged a vehicle parked inside the six-rai compound. Some trees were also damaged.

Pol General Ake Angsananont said Friday that those responsible for this attack might have also been responsible for the grenade attack on Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva's home on Tuesday.

"Behavioural patterns and the type of grenades used in both cases are similar," Ake, a deputy national police chief, said.

So far, the two assailants on a motorbike have not been identified as they were both wearing safety helmets, though there is camera footage of them entering the area. Ake went on to say that the request for arrest warrants was being processed through the Criminal Court.

He added that the pin for the US-made M-26 grenade used in the attack was also found at the scene, though the serial number on it had been scraped off. Footage shows the man sitting on the pillion seat lobbing the grenade in a military-like fashion.

Ake added that both the military and the police use these grenades.

Meanwhile, Suan Pakkad Palace located on Ayutthaya Road was open to visitors as usual Friday. The property, which serves as a museum, is owned Sukhumbhand's relatives.

Democrat urges Yingluck to quit over rice-pledging scheme

Democrat Party spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut Friday called on caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign in a move to take responsibility for the alleged irregularities in the government's controversial rice-pledging scheme.

"She is losing the legitimacy to push for reforms. Who will listen to her? If she is sincere, she should step down. She can use the NACC resolution as an excuse with her brother Thaksin," he said.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) on Thursday resolved to press charges against 15 people involved in the fake government-to-government rice deals claimed to have been signed by the government.

The NACC also resolved to investigate Yingluck for alleged dereliction of duty that allowed corruption to plague the scheme.

Some are suggesting that Takky would like to see a coup. Then he could play the victim again and his sister get lots of sympathy votes. A new pro-Takky government could try another amnesty bill for him. :p
