Police Start Reclaim Areas From Democracy Monument From Protesters

Police in full gear on Saturday started reclaiming areas near the Victory Monument through Makawan Rangsan Bridge which is used as rally site of anti-government protesters, Nation Channel reported.

 

They removed sacks of sands set up as barriers near the bridge.

 

However the attempt faced no resistance from the protesters whose numbers are small. The areas were controlled by Student and People Network for Thailand’s Reform and Dharma Army.

Columns of full-gear police are set up about 100 meters from protesters who sit down and pray. The monk is on the stage, telling protesters to be calm.

Police on Friday attempted to reclaim anti-government rally sites. They choose the day when Buddhists celebrate Maka Bucha Day and people worldwide celebrate Valentine's Day.

 

12.12pm : STR protesters reclaim from police their rally site at Chamai Maruchet Bridge.

 

11.40am : Police retreat completely from Chaeng Wattana and Misakawan and Makkawan rally sites. :wave:

 

11.10am : Explosion of what are believed to be firecrackers are heard near Makkawan Bridge. A female protester and a Siam Rath reporter are slightly injured.

10.45am : Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order chief Chalerm Yoobamrung says the centre would have launched crackdown on protesters, had it not been prohibited from doing so by the caretaker prime minister. He says Yingluck Shinawatra asked it not to suppress the protesters for fear of bloodshed. However, he claims the centre will do something in the afternoon to deal with anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee.

Satit says police abort crackdown at Chaeng Wattana after leading monk pray with protesters

 

 

Satit Wongnongtaey, a leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee, said police aborted the plan to crack down on protesters at the Government Complex after the monk leader there led protesters to sit down and pray.

 

"Police gave up beore the praying demonstrators and retreated from Chaeng Wattana," Satit said.

Two persons were injured when a firecracker bomb was hurled into the Makkawanrangsan bridge while anti-riot police were evicting anti-government protesters in their bid to retake the protesters’ encampments on Ratchadamnern Avenue before noon today.

 

One of the injured was a Siam Rath newspapers photographer, Watcharin Klinmali.

 

He was slightly injured on the right leg, while a woman protester was injured on the left leg. It was not known where the bomb was thrown from.

Hundreds of anti-riot police agreed to retreat from the Chaengwattana protest site before noon today after almost two hours of confrontation with protesters.

 

Anti-riot police moved out their prison vans and boarded trucks to return to their bases in Nonthaburi.

 

The sudden pull-out of the area came after another group of government supporters were mobilizing people in the area to counter the anti-government protesters.

 

The police fear that the confrontation and the appearance of another group, believed to be red-shirts, could lead to armed clashes of the two groups.

 

The Chaengwattana protest site became the small battle zone of two rival groups over a week ago. One person was killed and over a dozens injured in the gunfights.

 

The situation returned normal at noon today.

Hundreds of anti-riot police began to retake the encampment of the anti-government protesters at Yaek Misakawan intersection at 8.30 a.m. today with no resistance by protesters.

 

Armed with batons and shields and led by truck with loudspeaker, anti-riot police marched in a pincer movement in all directions to remove the sandbag barricades, concrete barriers of the protesters and also dismantle canvass tents.

 

Protesters were reported to evacuate from the encampment before the police would arrive.

 

The police spoke from the loud-speaker truck telling protesters not to resist the eviction, saying that protesters defied the state of emergency.

 

Now the anti-riot police are marching towards the Makkawan bridge to evict protesters there.
