Flashermac
A friend noticed his Dell laptop was suddenly running on the battery instead of the external powers source. The power cord is plugged in and the light shows it to be working, but the corner of the monitor shows the battery to be being used. What happened and how to fix it? Mekong
M5040 is the Inspiron range, first piece of advice I would offer is to look for BIOS update, seems to be most common problem with this model.

huumlaar
Power supply dead, get a new one from Fortune, 3000 for a Dell, 1500 for a copy
cavanami
Often, the cable coming out of the power supply gets frayed. I give the cable a firm pull and at times they will break, indicating that in fact the power supply cable was frayed. Splice the wires in the cable back together, see if it works.
