Shopping mall three times the size of Siam Paragon to launch in Bangna

Shopping malls in Bangkok tend to fall under two distinct categories: big or fancy.

Central Embassy, which opened last week, falls firmly under the category of fancy with more than 200 internationally renowned names such as Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Gucci, Hermes, Miu Miu, Prada and Ralph Lauren.

The Mall Group -- a rival to Central Group-- plans to invest THB20 billion into its ‘’Bangkok Mall’’ project. The Mall Group owns Siam Paragon and The Emporium, but now they plan to build a mall three times the size of Siam Paragon on 160,000 square meters of land at Bangna intersection. It will be the biggest mall in Thailand.

Under the concept "City within the City," Bangkok Mall will be the biggest investment from The Mall Group. The building will have a water park, theme park, condominiums and offices for rent.

Pawnshops crowded as school semester opens on Monday

Parents have been crowding into pawnshops to get money to help pay their children's educational expenses.

In Si Sa Ket's Muang district, where schools reopen tomorrow, the municipal pawnshop said it had Bt127 million to support parents and, if that was not enough, it had another Bt62 million in reserve.

The pawnshop is a source of cash for parents, including the 43,500 Si Sa Ket rice farmers who are still awaiting money from the rice-pledging scheme. They are owed Bt3.84 billion in total.

In Buri Ram's Muang district, the municipal pawnshop reported that it had obtained another Bt100 million after determining the previously set budget of Bt150 million was insufficient and that the number of customers had risen 30 per cent over last year.

In Khon Kaen's Muang district, the municipality's two pawnshops have Bt218 million in total.

They are offering a discounted interest rate until September 15 to celebrate the pawnshop service's 54th anniversary.

I see most people in the mall just for the air con! walking around, not buying anything!! Hundreds of small shops not selling a thing :dunno:

I also see many of the restaurants full up!!! Thais like to eat...

The mini-mall out by me, Porto Chino, is always crowded. The Foodland there seems to do enough business as there are not many farang out here and the majority of the farangs are English teachers who do not go spending money at Porto Chino...
