bust
Sydney siege: Hostages taken in Martin Place Lindt cafe; black flag hung in window A number of people are being held hostage in a siege at a cafe in the heart of Sydney's CBD. At least three people have been seen with their hands raised and pressed against the windows of the Lindt Chocolat Cafe, in Martin Place. A black flag with Arabic text has also been seen hanging in the shop window. The flag, which has been waved behind the hostages, has white text that says: "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of God." Dozens of heavily-armed police officers wearing protective clothing and helmets have taken up positions in the area with guns drawn. Witnesses have reported hearing loud bangs that sounded like gun shots.

StoneSoup
I just hope that there is a Australian SAS team getting a good eight hours of sleep this afternoon and evening, so that they can come on and take the night shift, and perhaps play "sandman" for a sleepy terrorist scumbag, about 4:00 am tomorrow morning. Flashermac
I sort of remember a nightclub called Martin's Place. Thought it was in King's Cross, but that was back in another century.

Flashermac
Just one terrorist who is threatening to kill you and no one does anything? Are the hostages all women? If I'm going to die, I'll at least go down fighting. If they all rush him, most of them will live.
waerth
Luckily enough this negative action by one person is provoking a very positive thing in Australia, Australians can be proud of this: #illridewithyou Sydney Siege: #IllRideWithYou Shows Support for Muslims http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/sydney-hostage-standoff/sydney-siege-illridewithyou-shows-support-muslims-n268436 Twitter users pledged their support for Australian Muslims facing a possible backlash as a suspected Islamist gunman took hostages in a Sydney cafe. The hashtag #IllRideWithYou trended globally as unconfirmed reports suggest that women in traditional Muslim dress had been intimidated on public transport in Sydney. Australian Muslim leaders also released a statement condemning the cafe siege, calling it a "despicable act."
waerth
Some more on the subject: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/asia-pacific/2014/12/illridewithyou-goes-viral-after-sydney-siege-2014121512387983113.html #illridewithyou goes viral after Sydney siege Anti-Islamaphobia campaign trends globally in solidarity with Muslims after cafe standoff raised fears of reprisal. Australians have taken to social media in solidarity with the country's Muslim community to counter concern about an anti-Muslim backlash, after a gunman took an unknown number of people hostage at a cafe in Sydney's financial and shopping district. Amid uncertainty about the hostage-taker's motives and fears of reprisals after a flag bearing the Islamic proclamation of faith, was raised in the cafe, some Australians created the hashtag, #illridewithyou in a bid to show solidarity with local Muslims who might feel threatened. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas, reporting from Sydney, said there was some reported racist sentiments towards Muslims especially on public transport following the standoff at the cafe. The hashtag trended globally on Twitter rapidly and in response, Australia's race discrimination commissioner Tim Soutphommasane said he was heartened by the campaign adding, "let's not allow fear, hatred and division to triumph." More than 40 Muslim groups condemned the siege, saying in a statement that they rejected "any attempt to take the innocent life of any human being or to instil fear and terror into their hearts". Flashermac
It appears that the hostages are all women, which answers my question about why they don't jump him. He has them all huddled in one corner, and he's described as bearded and armed with a shotgun. If he does start shooting though, the best thing they still can do is charge him. But do they realise that? p.s. Once again I ask ... when the hell did Islam become a RACE? Are Catholics a race? Buddhists? Protestants? Scientologists?
