Guest
This has been a debate for some time, if it's a good idea for Thailand to ease up on it's strict gambling laws, and have legal casinos. I can see both sides to this, on the one hand the freedom of choice to do as you wish with your money, and could lead to perhaps increased tourism and another source of revenue for the government. The other trying to protect the young and vunerable from the addiction of gambing. However, It would seem a majority in a poll disagree to a recent proposal on reform by the NRC http://www.bangkokpo...galsing-casinos A majority of people say they disagree to a proposal by a group of National Reform Council (NRC) members for the government to legalise casinos to generate income, saying gambling is a kind of vices which are immoral and illegal, according to the result of Nida Poll conducted by the National Institute for Development Administration. The poll was conducted on 1,501 people across the country between June 17-19. Asked what they think about the proposal by a group of NRC members, most of the respondents, 54.96%, said they do not agree to it, reasoning that gambling is immoral and illegal and casinos could cause youth to become addicted to gambling and are a source of crime. However, 37.04% agree to the proposal, saying illegal casinos are already rampant in Thailand, so they should be legalised. And, with legalised casinos in existence, the Thai people would not have to travel abroad but spend their money on gambling in the country. Moreover, legalised casinos can be a source of revenue, the same way as they are for neighbouring countries. A small number of respondents, 8.0%, had no comments. Flashermac
But would the police allow the competition with their casinos?

cavanami
There are several pluses to having legal casinos: 1. good paying jobs, usually getting generous tips. 2. provides an atmosphere for supporting businesses, food services, taxi/transportation, etc. 3. money for the government. The minuses are there also: 1. people getting addicted to gambling and for Thais, can they control themselves or will they becomes victims? 2. can bring mafia (illegal) influences. 3. money available to bribe/support corruption within the government. I see no quick and easy answer. I do know that the casino buses going to Pol Pet are full of gamblers, so it is a thriving business and I see 99% Thais in the casinos while providing jobs for Thais and the people of Cambodia.
