The former governor of Hong Kong Chris Patten made an interesting observation several months ago about Islam: unlike the Christianity, it never had a reformation.

Bingo. I've also read that the preface of the Koran has words to the effect: everything in this book is true and must never be questioned. So religious scholars are scared to scrutinize the Koran for fear of a death sentence, a la Salman Rushdie.

I see a few 12th century tyrants employing bankrupt religious ideologies and ugly appeals to nationalistic prejudices to enlist poor and alienated young men in an desperate and ultimately fruitless effort to fend off the 21st century.

Yep, and ultimately all Muslims will be set back because of the actions of a few misguided few.

Well, you know this IS the...what?...13th or 14th century for Islam, which is JUST about how far along Christianity was when it hit the Renaissance
The religious wars during the reformation were horrendous. When "God is on your side", there are no limits to the cruelty that can be inflicted on unbelievers.

There is an interesting article in today's International Herald Tribune from the The Washington Post which persuasively argues with "its leaders hiding and it finances and communications slashed by the war on terrorism, Al Qaeda is resorting to more indiscriminate attacks on 'soft' targets." Unfortunately, even though it has only a small Moslem population, much of Thailand is a soft target. I hope the security apparatus here takes this seriously and get its act together pronto.

Others, including pattaya127 (with whom I am not always in agreement ::), have already made the point that many of the hijakers were from the middle class. I'll limit my response to the globalization point.

The develop countries want globalization to have access to the third world market and the cheap labour of the developping countries, that's the real world.
The real world? Global poverty is not something recently invented for the benefit of multinational corporations.

Although multinational corporations are attracted by cheaper labor, where multinational corporations have invested, export industries have grown and the lives of ordinary people have benefited tremendously. Lets use Indonesia as an example because that is where the bombing occurred and because it is is on one of the lower rungs of the development ladder. Because it is poor, growth can be measured in terms of how much the average person gets to eat. Since 1970 per capita intake has risen from less than 2,100 to more than 2,800 calories per day. A bit less than one-third of young people are malnourished, but in 1975 the fraction was more than half.

These are real and measurable improvements in the quality of life, and none of them happened because of foreign aid or benign policies of the national government. They are all the indirect and unintended result of souless multinationals. It may not be pretty, but Capitalism works.

I was just watching Channel 7 news and they stated the most likely place in thailand for a terrorist threat was in phuket or pattaya.. no mention on BKK

Dont believe everything the papers or the news says. ANYWHERE that tourist are in large numbers would be ideal especially if the incident killed large numbers easily. In my humble opinion BKK would be the prime site for it because it is BKK and the firetrap mentioned earlier is the place that would result in casualties that would make Bali seem like a picnic and come close to the 9/11 figures, very few people in there would survive. I'm not trying to downsize Bali, the numbers are large, I believe both the UK and Australia currently have equivalent numbers confirmed dead AND IT WILL RISE.

The word Bangkok would immediately conjure up Thailand to all and sundry whereas many people would have to check up to see where Phuket or Pattaya were. A Bangkok bombing will destroy asian tourism.

If they were organised multiple blast would occur in the major tourist areas at the same time and a time that would match early morning and evening news in both USA and Europe. Just look at the timings of blasts in Ireland, just before or during primetime news broadcasts.

If you never before were't aware of what is around you before learn it now.

Is there an unattended package or bag near you in a bar

if so find out quickly has it been left there or does it belong to someone still there. I have on occassion in bars in BKK asked about items and found out whose it was quickly. I learnt my lessons in the 70s and have never forgotten them, I am never at ease if I see unattended bags or packages near me in any enviroment. Do not be embarrassed to make a fuss about bags or packages left unattended in places. In my late teens I frequently attended incidents and had to make the initial investigation as wether an item was likely to be a bomb or not (I specialised in weapons so what do they do, Oh lets send the weapons guy in), not exactly the career path I wanted to follow as an 18 year old walking up to suspected bombs. I at times thought I would never see my next birthday or even the next hour.

As they say have fun but don't lose track of what is happening around you
