Thais love to shorten words so they don't have to say the full word. Trouble is for the uniniiated it's really hard to follow.

Here are some that are pretty common. Those of you that already know the answers, don't post the answers, just post the abbreviations you don't know. Some abbreviations have more than one answer.

¡.¡.

ª.Ã.

Ã.ª.

Ã.Ã.

Ã.¾.

Ê.Ê.

Ê.Ç.

Ê.¹.

¼.Ã.

¨.».Ã.

».µ.·.

·.·.·.

¡.¡.¹.

¡.·.Ã.

Have fun!??

¡.¤. - ¡Ã¡®Ò¤à - This is the month of my birthday July ( ¡.¡. not ¡.¤.)

ª.Ã. - àªÕ§ãËÃè - Chiang Mai (possible but not the one I was thinking of.)

Ã.¾ - âç¾ÂÒºÒÅ - Rong Payaban - Hospital. (yes)

Ã.Ã. - âçàÃÕ¹ - Rong Rian - School. (yes)

Ã.ª - ÃËÒÇÔ·ÂÒÅÑÂàªÕ§ãËÃè - Mahawitayalia Chiangmai - Chiang Mai University?. (well done)

Ê.¹. - Êӹѡ§Ò¹ Samnakngan - Office. (possible but there is a more common usage)

¡.·.à - ¡Ãا෾ÃËÒ¹¤Ã - Krungthepmahanakorn - Bangkok (again correct)

Good effort

¡.¡. = kilogram (correct)

ª.Ã. = centimeter (again possible but not the one I was thinking of)

·.·.·. = Tourism authority/police of Thailand (correct)

¨.».Ã. = King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) (correct)

Do you know the full titles? I don't always.

  • 4 months later...

I'd forgotten about this.

¡.¡. (gor gai. gor gai) ¡ÔâÅ¡ÃÑà (kilokram) kilogram

ª.Ã. (chor chang. mor ma.) ªÑèÇâç (chua mong) hour - most commonly seen as 24ªÃ

Ã.ª. (mor ma. chor chang.) ÃËÒÇÔ·ÂÒÅÑÂàªÕ§ãËÃè (Mahawitayalai Chiang Mai) Chiang Mai University

Ã.Ã. (ror reua. ror reua.) âçàÃÕ¹ (rong rian) school

Ã.¾. (ror reua. por parn.)âç¾ÂÒºÒÅ (rong payaban) hospital

Ê.Ê. (sor seua. sor seua.) ÊÃÒªÔ¡ÊÀÒ¼Ùéá·¹ÃÒɮà (samachiksapah puthanrasadorn) Member of Parliment

Ê.Ç. (sor seua. wor wan.) ÊÃÒªÔ¡ÇزÔÊÀÒ (samachikwootisapa) Senator

Ê.¹. (sor seua. nor noo.) ʶҹյÓÃǨ (satanee tamruwat) police station

¼.Ã. (por peung. or ang) ¼ÙéÃӹǡÒà (pu amnuaykarn) school administrator/principal

¨.».Ã. (jor jarn. por pla. ror reua.) King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) (I don't know the full title in fact not many Thai do either))

».µ.·. (por pla. tor tao. thor taharn) PTT Petroleum Authority of Thailand (I don't know the full title in Thai)

·.·.·. (thor taharn. thor taharn. thor taharn.) ·èçà·ÕèÂÇä·Â (thong teow Thai) TAT- Tourism Authority of Thailand

¡.¡.¹. (gor gai. gor gai. nor noo.)¡Ò§à¡§ã¹ (kang keng nai) underpants (try finding that one in the dictionary)

¡.·.Ã. (gor gai. thor taharn. mor ma.)¡Ãا෾ÃËÒ¹¤Ã (Krungthepmahanakorn) The official Thai name for Bangkok

Before the 'usage Nazis' jump on me I know that not all of these are used in conversation, many are written abbreviated but spoken in full. Still some like the underpants one are used to hide the real meaning of the word.

Ê.¹. = Sua Nai (to keep the tradition of the ¡.¡.¹.)

¼.Ã. = director (position level within a government organisation or state enterprise, and is a person ranked in charge of a division), but not in a company where a director is called a ¡ÃÃáÒÃ

ÃÒ¨ÒÃÂìãËè = principal (of a school IMO), but if its a government school I guess he/she could be a ¼.Ã.

Ê.¹. (sor seua. nor noo.) is short for Ê¶Ò¹Õ without the µÓÃǨ part. However, its usually used in connection with a police station.

How about ¡.È.¹.? Anyone?
