Long Gun
I'm working in a very nice educational institution at the moment (yes, they do have some in the UK!) where the internet usage is protected by an overly enthusiastic filtering system. Many of the sites I regularly visit are blocked for one reason or another, sometimes it is very hard to see why. Web-based e-mail etc is not available and those sites and others deemed a bit dodgy are greeted with a fairly polite screen offering some attempt at explanation as to why this has been blocked. The managers behind this system are clearly Toon supporters as www.safc.com is blocked for being a 'generally bad site!'. Today I had a bit of time on my hands so I thought I'd see if I could access this board. Fortunately I had the sound off as I suspect the message would have been accompanied by some suitable music, but there on the screen flashing on and off in massive red letters to alert the teacher (fortunately, that would be me!) was something like 'Attempting to access PORNOGRAPHY!!!' Do they mean us?!?
think_too_mut
I was unable to access this board through my former company's net. But, going through "board.nanaplaza.com" was OK. Maybe, that's why KS asked for more questions for nana. People accessing the board the way I used to, don't ever see the banner for "ask nana". SiLeakHunt
I had a friend a female farang (Lord forgive me my sins) who loves LOS as much as us and was branded with the pervert stick for trying to access bangkokpost.com........ What have we done to deserve this?
Guest
A while back one of our workers logged onto the penthouse site and was deluged by hundreds of pop-ups. Shortly afterward the Admnistrator called him: The conversation went like this: IT : "mmmmmm it seems that you have been looking at an inordinate amount of smut" Worker: "i coudn't help it i was hit with millions of pop-ups" IT: "well, may i suggest in future you try www.(name deleted) no pop-ups and the smut is heaps better, it's from Amsterdam." End of conversation. A daily ritual was born untill the HR bitch caught on. ::
Coss
Says SiLeakHunt: I had a friend a female farang (Lord forgive me my sins) who loves LOS as much as us and was branded with the pervert stick for trying to access bangkokpost.com........ What have we done to deserve this? Where I come from, the word Bangkok is associated with terrible hedonism and worse. When I explain that that attitude is equivalent to painting our own country's reputation with the flavours and colours of our local red light district, I get blank stares and I can see eyes glazing over, people having their home truths ripped from their bosoms in a most unsatisfactory manner. No, they don't like it up 'em, not at all...
harlequinbkk
I think these website filtering systems are a bit of joke. First of all, with all the information on the net, and more being added every day, no filter can reasonably hope to block more than a small fraction of what is deemed to be objectionable. Which leads me to my second point - what is 'objectionable' content is different for different people. Maybe filters are justifiable to restrict children's use of the Web, but even then it should be understood that it is merely a speed bump - they will get around it without too much effort. But for adult Web use, I think people who set up filtering systems are just trying to (unsuccessfully) play God. Harlequin
Pom_Jao_Choo
Have you considered saving your backloged reading to disk at home or emailing pages to yourself ?
bibblies
Or you can access things via a proxy service, like www.anonymiser.com. (There are lots of others.) Then not even your service provider will know what you're looking at.
thai3
Those sorts of sites are the first ones they block, our URL blocker must be quite sophisticated as it cost 15,000 quid, happily the people who administer it are as lazy as I am so it is not used properly. The only things I cannot access are chat sites and those anonymiser type ones-peter
Guest
I do never access this site from work, but the worst incident at work was during the worldcup. They blocked almost every site that had a live-ticker. The reaction was, we built up a tv-room and 80% of the crew was not working!
