BKK's nightlife is dead - exagerated?

i'll throw in my 2 cents to say that early closings suck

Crash,

Sure it sucks, never said otherwise......

Sorry but I think you missed completely the point here. Opening 24 h does not mean that you HAVE TO stay for 24h, but that you have the FREEDOM to decide when you want to go and how long you want to stay.

Individual freedom - that's what democracy is all about. But it looks that some people just don't get it

Hardy,

It does seem the opposite to me..... my claim is that *even though* there is an early closing, there *is* still sanuk, I even added *more* than in Belgium......

Sure, its more fun if all stays open later, or all night, I only stated it did not bother me, cos there was still more than enough sanuk to be had.

And I added that an early closing was not unique to BKK....... which others do confirm as well (but thats not the argument her anyway).

You all are so involved in whinging all over the place, you even have to claim that I dont get it.

Huuummmm.... newsflash : I do, but you dont :D

Enjoy the sanuk that is there, I cant......

You got it wrong chum. A true democracy is about majority rules. The powere of government is controlled politically by the masses. The individual has the right to effect change. At least in theory this stuff applies.

We in the USA call ourselves a Democratic society and we are, although we have a Republic style government.

Look around the USA and you will see that many different municipalities create their own rules for bar closings and alcohol sales. These local laws are a result of the local community comprised of individuals but collectively empowering their government to institute and enforce these laws.

Los Angeles which is home to the hedonistic Hollywodd community has strict nightlife laws all based on booze.

Bars must stop serving alcohol at 1am and all nightlife venues must close at 2am. Who would have thought in free and liberal Southern California which is also the capital of the pornography industry, that commercial nightlife activities end at 2am? Sucks for a major metropolitan area and toursist attraction to have such laws but that is what the empowered government mandates.

You want to see draconian in our "free society" take a trip to Salt Lake City Utah, home of the Mormons. Alcohol is sold by the government on certain days and at certain times or private cllubs where one has to purchase a membership. Also I think there is only one or 2 strip clubs in the city and prostitution supposedly does not exist.

How do like that type of nightlife in major US cities? Thailand nightlife shutting down at 2am? Big deal. Evidently mainstream Thais want it or how else would you explain it. Thais vote for their leaders so if it really pisses them off I gues they will show it at the election booth.

The early closing times are hurting a lot of Thais that is for sure. I work in a Thai comedy troup and when we get together at Rama IX cafe before we leave for our round you speak to the guys of other groups (most gather there, you can see all your favourite Thai tv comedians).

Most are bitching as there is less and less work. The one o clock closing really pisses them off. They voted en bloc for Chuwit. Also many owners of Thai places are complaining. On late shows we regularly see coppers coming in to make sure the place closes in time. We perform all around BKK and sometimes also Nonthaburi or Samut Prakan. It is the same all over everybody is bitching about the early closing.

So the farangs are not the only ones effected. Also many Thai places check id.

Good to hear that Thais are voting to effect change, instead simply crying in their beers. If others do what your peers do then something might come of it. Farangs are not going to change the policies, only Thais can.

I wonder what kind of effect Chuwit has had on the thiinking of the average Thai. I wonder if his crusade will influence the average Thai to question the status quo. Maybe he has influenced the next generation of Thai leaders from the commoners.

In my personal opinion the current government is something like the last reign of the dinosaurs. Note that most are in their llate 50's and 60's a new generation is coming, whom have studied abroad. But we are not to discuss politics here.

Most are disillusioned with the current politicians so will vote for young people (Apirak) or new alternatives (Chuwit)

"Same in Belgium, discos opening from friday night till lunch time on monday - non-stop as well.....

Does that mean you have to be there till the last minute of opening "

No, it means U can chose the time U leave the place or get there, why not on sunday morning for example?

It's a matter of individual choice, a problem that obviously in this thread doesn't quite get to your consciousness
