Three more patients have been left partially blind after having their cataracts removed at Khon Kaen Hospital, bringing the number of victims of serious post-surgery bacterial infections to 10.

Of 25 people who had eye surgery at the state-run hospital between Dec 14 and Dec 16, 11 developed infections.

The hospital reported yesterday that seven of the patients reported earlier to have lost their sight in one eye have been joined by three others.

Nang Unsua and Peng Kongsi, both of Khon Kaen, are now blind in their right eye. Ladda Janket, from Maha Sarakham, has lost the use of her left eye, the hospital said.

Of the 11 patients diagnosed with post-surgery infections, only Thongpak Thongrak has not been permanently affected. Her condition is improving, according to the hospital.

Khon Kaen Hospital director Weeraphan Suphanchaiyamat said an investigation into the cause of the infections was under way.

After the operations, the hospital destroyed 85 items in the operating theatre that might have been contaminated with germs, he said.

The hospital has paid 50,000 baht in compensation to each patient hit by the infection.

The victims will receive another 120,000 baht from the National Health Security Office.

Who is surprised considering the hygienic standards here. I mean, has anybody ever seen cleaning staff (anywhere in LOS) using any kind of detergent or chemical? All I see them using is the same old blackened towel which they will use on the toilet seat, on the floor, on the walls and then in the kitchen. Of course they spread infection.

Then you were never in intensive care units in any Thai hospital ?

Mom-in-law had openheart surgery 6 years ago in a public hospital, staff, care and hygienic standards were equal to Europe.

Visits required masks, gloves and shoecovers.

And that was under the 35 Bt program.

Only :up::up: from me.

What I saw for four months in a large name BKK hospital (S...j), the hygiene was NOT impressive. Masks were optional, foot wear, non-existent, etc.

My friend went there the end of July, 2009...S' hospital ran all the tests, put him on the meds...suddenly, they informed me he had pneumonia....WTF, didn't you do 1999 test and suddenly he has pneumonia...and NOW you are saying he brought it in from a previous hospital...can you say "fark bullshit", Thai face saving crap!!!

I would NEVER do any serious medical procedure in LOS!!! Too much bullshit and face saving!!! IMO

One young man went to an Arizona hospital with MRSA. After waiting 6 hours in the waiting room - he died. Cause of death - his blood pressure went up and his pulse rate went sky high causing his heart to give out.

The "grandmother" in my household had cataract surgery in one of the state hospitals in Phitsanulok ( a university teaching hospital). It was a disaster. She suffered excruciating pain and was in the hospital for about 10 days. Now, she had insurance but, unfortunately did not tell the staff that she had insurance so she either got a student or obviously a doctor who was not an opthamologist/retinologist/specialist. But given her situation, a specialist from BKK came up to see her and basically saved her eye. The "doctor" who did the original operation was eventually told that his services were no long needed as they found that several other of his patients had recently suffered under his care and the hospital was afraid that it was getting a bad name.

When the eye specialist from BKK found out that grandmom had insurance, she took on the case and did her other eye shortly thereafter (successful, with no pain), and now, after some healing process on the initial botched surgery, the finally eye has been operated on and fixed successfully. Now, would she have gotten that lucky on the 30 baht plan--I don't think so.
