I remember a GI in RVN who was always pumping weights and acting macho back at the fire base. He'd been a wrestling champ in high school, and any time there was a fight, he'd be in the middle of it. He would wade in swinging in free for alls at the EM club. Then I saw him one day when we spotted some movement in the tree line just before sundown. The LT told everyone to fire off one magazine to see what response we'd get. (Oh, well ... he was an LT.) We cut loose but drew no return fire. Whoever was out there probably ran like hell in the opposite direction.

When I looked at the platoon's tough guy, he was practically shitting himself. He mumbled something about us needing to get the hell out of there, and I realised he was petrified. Then it dawned on me: all of his strength meant nothing when it came to a fire fight. Any little VC or NVA with a rifle was a match for him with his M16. I've never looked at "tough guys" quite the same way since.
