Bush certainly deserves some blame here, both for the mess in the Middle East and for the impact on a generation of American policy thinkers whose strategic instincts have been thrown off kilter by their emotional reactions to his poorly judged and poorly executed Middle East policies.

Invade the country - then dismiss the entire Iraq Army.

Let loose all of those troops - some trained to shoot weapons. Unemployed with nothing to do. No income.

President Obama vowed to “turn the page on the ugly partisanship in Washington†during the 2008 campaign, but for the most part found it impossible to do – and is now trying to work around Congress and entrenched partisan gridlock by imposing policies through executive orders.

 

According to a revealing new study, the political deadlock is not just about Washington: It reflects the sharpest ideological divide within the American public perhaps at any time in recent history. Democrats and Republicans are more deeply divided along ideological lines – and partisan rage and antipathy runs much higher than at any time in the past two decades, the report by the Pew Research Center concludes.

 

While these trends have been manifest in national politics for years, they’ve also had a profound impact on everyday Americans. People with strong ideological views in both parties tend to socialize and befriend others who share their views – to the exclusion of anyone else. They often make decisions on where to live based on those ideological considerations, while hardliners on both sides routinely impugn the motives of those who disagree with them.

Hillary Clinton may have left the White House “dead broke†in her own words over a decade ago, but the same can hardly be said about her daughter, Chelsea, who as Politico revealed today, was being paid an annual salary of $600,000 at NBC News before switching to a month-to-month contract earlier this year.

As a reminder, the younger Clinton, who previously worked as an analyst at $12 billion hedge fund Avenue Capital in a quid-pro-quo which its owner Marc Lasry, a close friend of Bill Clinton, had hoped would bring him a fast track appointment to the French ambassador position (and which was scuttled last year after several of his poker-playing acquaintances were charged in a mob gambling ring), joined NBC News as a “special correspondent†in November 2011. “She was up for renewal or non-renewal this year. Instead, the sources said, the network decided to keep her on the payroll on a month-to-month basis so that the two parties could sever ties if Clinton’s mother, Hillary, runs for president.â€

So what exactly did Chelsea do to command such a hefty salary?

As special correspondent, Clinton worked on service-related feature assignments for NBC’s “Rock Center with Brian Williams†until the show’s cancellation in June 2013. Clinton has since worked on packages for NBC Nightly News.

In that time, Clinton’s principal occupation has been the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, where she has been a major force in steering her parents’ charitable work in the final years of her mother’s tenure at the State Department, and since then.

This April, she announced that she was pregnant. Clinton is due to deliver her first child in the fall, and it’s unclear if she would resume work with NBC after that.

HuffPost's Ryan Grim preserved McCain's "victory" tweet, in case it were to disappear from McCain's account.

 

While it could be the case that McCain forgot about his 2010 "victory" proclamation, it is worth noting he managed to recall a statement from 2011 where he warned Obama of the risks of removing U.S. forces from Iraq.

 

As the situation in Iraq has worsened, McCain has been joined by other Republicans in chastising Obama's hesitancy to involve the U.S. in the conflict, as Politico reports. In addition to hitting Obama over the removal of troops from Iraq, GOP hawks have been pressing for increased assistance to the Iraqi government with their defense. Obama has said that the U.S. will need to provide some means of support as Iraq defends against the Islamic militants, but has ruled out sending troops.

 

As Paul Waldman of The Washington Post notes, there is reason to take McCain and other Republicans' criticism of Obama with a grain of salt: they were often wrong about Iraq when the case was being made for the invasion of 2003. MSNBC's "All In With Chris Hayes" put together a video compilation of John McCain being wrong on Iraq.

HOMESTEAD, FL — EXCLUSIVE — A Florida couple was traumatized after a dozen heavily armed SWAT agents crashed through their front door, flash-banged their cat, aimed rifles at them and searched their home without explanation.

 

The raid took place in the pre-dawn hours of June 10th, 2014. At approximately 6:16 a.m., Kari Edwards and her live-in boyfriend were intruded upon by men dressed in full SWAT gear and wielding rifles.
