Actually, from the OP, if meat and dairy farms drain half the country's water, we should be grateful. The amount of rain we get here, if half of it wasn't being drained, we'd be flooded all the time.
  3. Apparently this is being held in NZ, at least I am looking at NZ play Ukraine in front of 25,000 interested persons. These young men must be extremely delicate, in the last ten minutes alone, I have seen six of them, apparently mortally injured. Luckily, the attendant older men, come to see them and squirt some magic juice, from what looks like a water bottle, on them, which mends the broken bones and sprains and off they go again. Remarkable! I must see if I can get some of that magic juice, it'd be just the thing for gout. I did see one incident that mystifies me, two players contesting the ball, attempting to 'head' it to their respective advantages, not only miss the ball, but each other, their heads clearly passing some inches away from each other. Still, both collapse on the ground, writhing in pain and agony, halting the game. Fortunately the magic juice did its job and both recovered to play on. I can only think, that they both possess the soccer equivalent of Star War's force and managed to injure each other invisibly. At the 85 minute mark now, 0-0 but enormous excitement and cheers, every time someone misses the goal.

  6. With the ongoing prosecutions of so many of the 'team' there will probably, be enough fallout to do Blatter in eventually.
  7. Another one, nearly like the other one
  8. "My interpretation is they're using it as leverage and a mechanism of control (e.g., tow the line, behave, or we'll trot out these charges and start throwing people in jail). I agree with you.
  9. I quite agree, what took so long? Did they have to wait for him to get a good one? Like Aus or NZ? Or is he still a Montenegran Mountie? 5555555 gratuitous pic
  10. Modern thinking suggests they are all able to be rehabilitated. Though I'd bet a dollar or two, that the young'un who held up the human head, will do it again when he's a teenager and full of angst. The tribalist in me says put them in the grinder and make fertiliser.

  12. BANGKOK: -- The Foreign Ministry has revoked former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's two passports after reaching the conclusions that his recent interview has affected the security and the country's reputation. An investigation is underway and criminal charges could be pressed against the self-exiled Thaksin. The revocation of U957441 and Z530117 passports became effective on Tuesday and was announced on the Foreign Ministry's website on Wednesday. The decision follows an alert from security authorities regarding Thaksin's interview, part of which, they believed, would have an impact on the security, reputation and integrity of the Kingdom. The ministry agreed that the interview violated the ministry's regulations regarding the holding of a passport. Source: http://www.nationmul...d-30261046.html
  13. Kingsman The Secret Service 2014 - previously reviewed here. My take is - enjoyable, some nice music, a little 20 something-ish, nice exploding heads, if they do a sequel I'll look. Worth a watch.
  14. In fact I would argue, similar measures for other groups in the world, like Catholics, Arabs, Jews, Synchronised Swimmers, May Pole Dancers, indeed the poor everywhere, oh hang on, it's be easier to round 'em up and shoot 'em, except the ones I like of course
  15. I'm not taking sides in this, just posting an interesting article that may illuminate... ----- Controversial law requires mothers to 'stagger out children' in Myanmar The Population Control Health Care Bill - drafted under pressure from hard-line Buddhist monks with a staunchly anti-Muslim agenda - was passed by parliamentarians last month. Photo / Getty Images Myanmar's president has signed off on a law requiring some mothers to space their children three years apart despite objections by a visiting senior US diplomat and rights activists, who worry it could be used not only to repress women, but also religious and ethnic minorities. The Population Control Health Care Bill - drafted under pressure from hard-line Buddhist monks with a staunchly anti-Muslim agenda - was passed by parliamentarians last month. US Deputy Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he warned Myanmar leaders during face-to-face talks last week about the dangers of the bill. On Saturday, hours after the diplomat left, state-run media announced President Thein Sein had signed it into law. As predominantly Buddhist Myanmar started moving from dictatorship to democracy four years ago, newfound freedoms of expression lifted the lid on deep-seeded hatred for minority Muslims -- including Rohingya Muslims now arriving on Southeast Asian shores in crowded, rickety boats. Many are fleeing persecution and violence that has left up to 280 people dead and forced another 140,000 from their homes in western Rakhine state. They are living under apartheid-like conditions in dusty, crowded camps, with little access to education or adequate medical care. They also have little freedom of movement, having to pay hefty bribes if they want to pass police barricades, even for emergencies. The population law -- which carries no punitive measures -- gives regional authorities the power to implement birth-spacing guidelines in areas with high rates of population growth. Though the government says the law is aimed at bringing down maternal and infant mortality rates, activists argue that it steps on women's reproductive rights and can be used to suppress the growth of marginalized groups. Hard-line Buddhists have repeatedly warned that Muslims, with their high birthrates, could take over the country of 50 million even though they currently represent less than 10 per cent of the population. "It's very disappointing," Khin Lay, a women's rights activist, said of the president's decision to sign off on the law. "If the government wants to protect women, they should strengthen laws already in place to do that." Blinken, who met with Thein Sein, the army's commander in chief and other top government officials during a two-day visit to Myanmar, said he expressed "deep concern" about the law and three others in the assembly aimed at protecting race and religion. "The legislation contains provisions that can be enforced in a manner that would undermine reproductive rights, women's rights and religious freedom," Blinken told reporters Friday. "We shared the concerns that these bills can exacerbate ethic and religious divisions and undermine the country's efforts to promote tolerance and diversity." http://www.nzherald.co.nz/politics/news/article.cfm?c_id=280&objectid=11453961
  16. I guess she's entitled to her opinion. Despite my often stated - 'round 'em up and shoot'em' attitudes, my real stance, is that, what appear to be unfortunates, even medieval muslims, deserve to be treated with humanity. Even folk I really, really, don't like. And in my view, you are just as well informed as anyone here
  17. They probably don't know either
  18. I remember, the one I met had dark hair, this one is not the one
