  1. Pesky foreigners are overcrowding our airports and straining our infrastructure so lets limit them so we do not have to improve our infrastructure ........ LOL (it also solves Thai Airways having to deal with competition) http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general/570275/thailand-to-end-open-sky-policy Thailand will restrict the number of incoming flights as they are overloading its skies and airports, Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said on Friday. The minister said the move away from the "open sky" policy was needed to ensure aviation safety. Staff were now working on the full details."Our sky cannot provide space for more flights. To ensure safety and prevent aircraft collisions, we must limit the use of our sky, manage flight schedules and re-organise flights to times of light traffic to prevent congestion in some periods. The problem must be solved quickly," ACM Prajin said. Immediate changes were necessary because International Civil Aviation Organization representatives would arrive in Thailand again next year as part of the ICAO's universal security audit programme, he said. If Thailand once again did not meet the ICAO's safety standards it would worsen the existing problems facing the Thai aviation industry, the transport minister said. At present, 800 flights were using Suvarnabhumi airport daily, but it was designed to ideally handle only 600 flights, he said. Under his "Open Sky with Conditions" policy, transport authorities will draw up a plan specifying the acceptable number of visiting flights, and carefully consider the capacities of individual airports to handle these flights, ACM Prajin said. The plan would be proposed to the cabinet for immediate implementation, he said. Voradet Harnprasert, deputy permanent secretary for transport, said details of the new policy would be ready by September. Thailand has applied an open sky policy since 2001 to promote tourism, and the number of domestic and international flights has been rising steadily ever since, he said. Suvarnabhumi airport's capacity had already been exceeded. It was planned to handle 45 million passengers yearly, but was actually handling 50 million, he said.
  2. Prayuth and his militairy govt is really pushing to get all of these infra projects started ASAP before civilian govs come in. Most of these plans were already made in 1999 but all civilian govs (especially Thaksin!!) kept on postponing them as they wanted to redesign the routes for their cronies benefits. Once construction is started there is not much that can be done anymore. Militairy also pushing nationwide many new railway lines and some new motorways. Also the Bangkok Riverside beautification project is pushed through. It might be considered bad form by many but Prayuth is using article 44 to push these improvements through. Which is one of the good things the govt is doing. As soon as a civilian govt comes back in (whether yellow or red) much of this progress is not possible. And Thailand desperately needed these infra upgrades.
  3. And this is a good overview of the future network and what is currently under construction and what is finished.
  4. Also apart from checking in at 2bangkok may I also recommend the Skyscrapercity forums Thai section (which is mostly in Thai) for all the latest projects in Thailand. Also all the latest infrastructure. http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=326
  5. The Sukhumvit line was opened in 1999. And has been extended multiple times since. 2 extensions are being build currently (Samut Prakan and the new one to Khoo Kot). And 2 more extensions are being planned (further out to Bang Phli and Khoo Khot to Lam Lukka. Also a branch going to Suvarnabhumi over Bang Na road is considered). It is normal in most countries to extend lines from time to time. Part of the currently being build extensions is park and ride facilities at a number of stations same like the subway has at lardprao. The Sukhumvit line actually has park and ride facilities at Morchit. To give a heads up to the Thais they are getting better at it with every new extension and new line. They are integrating more and more things. Like upgrading roads and intersections in the same project, integrating facilities etc. A big problem is politics though. For politic reasons the Green line extension to Samut Prakan might not be run by BTS but someone else. This means there will not be a connection and people have to switch trains at Bearing.
  6. The green line is the Sukhumvit line .......... There are multiple extensions each done one by one. The purple line (Nonthaburi) will open in March next year. The Blue ring extension somewhere 2017 or so. The purple line is supposed to be extended towards the new parliament through democracy monument (Ratchadamnoen) to Chinatown and then on to Thonburi side. But contracts have not been signed yet. Also Orange line contracts are supposed to be signed this year and construction started later. As well as a number of monorail lines. The coming year construction for many many new lines and extensions will start, As well as a step up in red line (train) commuter system. So in the coming few years traffic will become really horrible. But once they finish all of it it will become very convenient to travel around Bangkok by mass transit.
  7. Hey New Zealand is a former Dutch province ;p We didn't want to keep New Holland though, to many poisonous creatures.
  8. Well they are finally going to start building the extension of the green line from Morchit to Khoo Khot. This means that the flyover of Ratchada over Phaholyothin will be demolished and the flyover neer Kasetsart uni will be demolished. Both will be replaced in conjunction with the building of the green line. This means that from June 1st onwards traffic on that part of Ratchada will become a mess, Message on 2bangkok.com forum: http://2bangkokforum.com/showthread.php?3579-Mo-Chit-Khoo-Khot-Ext-contracted/page11 ITD starting the work on Mochit - Saphan Mai section of Mochit - Khoo Khot extension of green line on 1 June 2015 to get done by 9 Feb 2019 ITD has set up 4 construction zones for the first contract - ready to demolish the Ratchayothin Flyover in July 2015 - after telling the commander of traffic police to get approval on construction plan The officer for administrating Green line extension is near Ploen restaurant on Vibhavadee Rangsit Highway for better coordination The 4 zones according to ITD to speed up the project are 1. Mochit - Ratchayothin Intersection 2. Ratchayothin Intersection - Kaset Intersection 3. Kaset Intersection - Laksi Circle 4. Laksi Circle - Saphan Mai Market Ratchayothin flyover which is zone 2 will be demolished in July 2015 to be done within 3 month and the construction of Ratchayothin tunnel as the replacement will be started after the demolision while working on the construction of green line. Therefore, Ratchayothin Intersection will need traffic rearrangement - the details will be discussed with Phahonyothin Police station whcih is a few hundred meters away from Ratchayothin Intersection so those police can make an announcement for traffic changes to avoid this intersection unless absolutly necessary.

  13. Yes it is still very dark here. And a light drizzle at the moment.
  14. Nok did not merge into NokScoot. NokScoot is a seperate airline owned by Nok and Scoot (a daughter of Singapore Airlines) Meant to operate medium and longhaul routes from Thailand same like AirAsia X does.
  15. As it is pouring down with rain since 6 this morning I agree on this. http://thainews.prd....OC5805130010020 BANGKOK, 13 May 2015 (NNT) - The astrologer predicted during the royal ploughing ceremony earlier today that there will be more water in Thailand this year. The forecast was made after the astrologer picked up four pieces of cloth presented to him and studied them. He revealed that farms situated on higher grounds will benefit from a large amount of rain this year. However, he added that those in the low-lying areas could be damaged by the floods. The oxen have chosen to eat only sesame and grass during the ceremony, which was presented alongside five other items including rice, corns, green beans, water and liquor. The oxen’s selection was interpreted as water and food becoming abundant in Thailand this year.
  16. The saga continues. Luckily these are 5 airlines most sane people would avoid anyway. They do Charter flights for Chinese and Thai tourists mainly. R Airlines was started by one of the red shirt leaders. No surprise there as they have never taken safety seriously http://thainews.prd....OC5805130010014 BANGKOK, 13 May 2015 (NNT) -Following a thorough examination, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has found the aviation safety systems of five Thai airlines inadequate. According to the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), the airlines in question are Orient Thai, Nok Scoot, Jet Asia, City Airways and R Airlines. The detected flaws involved flight documents, aircraft maintenance and staff. The examination by the Civil Aviation Administration of China has discovered that documents of flight and aircraft maintenance of the airlines were incomplete. Some of the airplanes were aged above 14, while their maintenance failed to be carried out as schduled. The number of trained staff is also insufficient. The DCA, however, insisted that the airlines could address the problems before the deadline. In addition to concerns from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the country will soon have to handle a new round of challenges. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be observing its aviation safety standards in July, at which time the Thai authorities would still be drawing up aviation safety manuals. The FAA may impose tougher measures or restrictions on Thai airlines if they fail to pass the FAA’s requirements.

  20. @bust doesnt it show up that there is something wrapped in carbon paper? I have actually always wondered about that.
  21. And a very nice one from a rocket to landing:
  22. @Flashermac ..... to get a better impression of the actual game: Scott Manley has been making video's ever since the game was in open Alpha. Kerbal Space Program is not supposed to have ships etc. But the community modded it in having all kinds of unintended effects. Here Scott Manley tries to land the SpaceX Falcon 1st stage on a barge. He uses mods extensively so you wont get this with the standard game. A standard game tutorial showing the challenges of simply launching a rocket. Trying to keep your kerbals alive can be challenging. I massacred about 6 once in a wrong gravity turn . There are mods that will actually do the flying for you. But that is no fun
  23. News about the EM drive now also on a major site like space.com. http://www.space.com...e-em-drive.html "The technology is largely theoretical, but initial test results have been officially presented, by both NASA and Chinese space agencies. The idea is also quite controversial, since it seems to violate certain Newtonian law of physics. According to the report, the significance of the new research is that NASA has successfully tested EM propulsion in a hard vacuum for the first time. Previous tests were conducted in atmospheric conditions."
  24. Elon Musk loves it ... he twitters about it sometimes Anyway the game is great as you need a basic understanding of physics etc. It rekindled my interest in the space programs. W
  25. Sorry that I didnt mention it. I assumed you read up on EM drive concept before reacting I know about Ion drives. Use them all the time in Kerbal Space Program
