I was in a coffee shop waiting a long time once and finally ordered something from the worker who had her back to me.When she turned and looked at me she asked where that customer just went?? I said I ordered and she said no YOU did NOT!!! it was Kon Thai na nawn..Then she would speak to me only in broken English. Okkkk. I had been in LOS for 3 months and it was flowing pretty good...if not too subject technical- Sometimes the Thai are just not comfy with farang speak Thai- If the Thais speak English better than my Thai- I go with English but my pet peeve is struggling I broken English when Thai is much easier. The entire when to speak Thai question is tricky. I think Cav's point is well taken. If I am with poo yai and they prefer English (for face or whatever) I go with English- If its a highly technical subject-well sometimes its tough- If regular life I just speak Thai In"entertainment places" I sometimes like to keep my mouth shut and listen to the girls talking shit about the "farang" Being called a dog or whatever is enlightening :grinyes: If I am away from LOS for a few months I always worry bout my Thai but somehow a switch just gets turned and out it pours- but can always learn more...

I guess you point is if one's Thai is not reasonably fluent or better ---stick with polite English. I agree..

Don't try to speak Thai with the cops once you're past the very initial stage - and even then, use caution... Its very rare to find a Thai cop that speaks English as well as I do Thai so I do not understand what you mean. Just curious .. :dunno:

The one building that burned to the ground far from where the police were firing tear gas into the crowds of protestors, and those taking advantage of the demonstrations to loot and burn, just happened to be the church that Michael Brown's family were members and attended. The officer on the other end of the line told him that he needed to get to his church right away. By the time Lee arrived, the cinder-block structure had been gutted by flames. ATF agents said somebody forced open the front door and started the fire in the children's area. This Sunday the church will hold its services in a parking lot. Naturally, his insurance company is refusing to pay for damages. They informed Pastor Lee that his policy did not cover damages because it was located in "an area where riots and civil disobedience occurred." The fact that the church is no where near the area where the other buildings were burned and that there were no demonstrations or protests in its vicinity apparently does not matter to the whoever denied the Flood Church's claim. A UN report has condemned the United States for violating the terms of an international anti-torture treaty. The panel took Washington to task for police brutality, military interrogations, and capital punishment protocols. Released by the UN Committee Against Torture, the report took issue with the excessive use of force by law enforcement and accused the US police force of racial profiling. The report was released on Friday, just days after the contentious decision of a Missouri grand jury not to indict a white officer accused of shooting Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen. The decision triggered a wave of protests nationwide. The UN watchdog expressed “deep concern at the frequent and recurrent police shootings or fatal pursuits of unarmed black individuals.†Though the report did not specifically mention the events in Ferguson, Mike Brown’s parents met with the committee to discuss their son’s case in Geneva earlier this month. The 10-person panel, which periodically reviews the records of the 156 countries which ratified the Convention Against Torture – a non-binding international human rights treaty – cited mounting concerns over “racial profiling by police and immigration offices and growing militarization of policing activities.†“We recommend that all instances of police brutality and excessive use of force by law enforcement officers are investigated promptly, effectively and impartially by an independent mechanism,†said panel member Alessio Bruni at a news conference in Geneva.
