chilli13
as I see it WHO just reacted to the media scare at some point & all WHO is doing is pointing out what countries/cities SARS infected people are in & what areas seems to be transmitting SARS further on... as of late UK/London has been added to that list & Toronto being at the top I just wonder why exactly people thinks this is an far east thing only
jp1
I just wonder why exactly people thinks this is an far east thing because the source of this disease is in East Asia (China, HKG) and moreover because most known cases of SARS are in East Asia. chilli13
so if - eventually - there's more cases of sars outside east asia is it still an exclusive far east thing p.s. if by say a year from now sars still gets the same(or more) media coverage than now I might start buying into it
mongatu
This post is not in response to anyone in particular. Just wanted to say that I think the problem with SARS not necessarily being overblown because: 1) It appears to have a higher mortality rate than regular flu. Remember even though it is true that thousands die from the flu each year, millions of people actually get it and survive it. So the mortality rate, while significant, is pretty low. Also, most who die from the regular flu are old or in poor health. The mortality rate for SARS so far appears from what I have read to be higher than the usual flu, and it seems to kill young healthy people as well, so this is a serious concern. 2) It is not yet known the extent to which the disease will spread or whether it will be sucessfully contained. 3) So far there is no generally accepted effective treatment for those who are afflicted with SARS, although it is interesting that very few, if any, of those who have been treated for it in the US have died so far. So I think it is reasonable to be pretty concerned about the situation, however, based on what I know so far, I wouldn't cancel my travel plans to LOS over it. Guest
There are actually now more cumulative SARS cases being reported for the US (193 as of 4/15) than for Singapore (162 as of same date). On April 15th, 19 new cases were reported in the US, a 10% increase in one day. In Canada a cumulative 100 cases have been reported. 13 of those have died, 27 recovered and the other 60 are still being treated. Thus the 'final status' of those no longer in treatment shows 33% died. This though appears to be unusually high compared to other countries - the final status ending in death is 18% for Hong Kong and 13% in Singapore. In mainland China its 6%, though I don't think anybody really believes the stats reported for China (China shows only 266 still in treatment, though there are reports that the hospitals in Beijing are full of suspected cases... even though the disease is supposedly centered in another far away province). sky brow
OK,I Agree,it wasnt a media scare from day one.But at some point the media has run with it.A point where they are just filling pages. Pushing the story to the limit.I dont think there is a conspiracy. Some consumers can get refunds on fares and accomodation. But many dont get full refunds and in some cases they may get no refunds on certain parts of the holiday package.Others who choose to re route air travel away from SARS countries may have to shell out for money for new fares or airlines to get to their original or new destination. cheers sky brow. My original post was commenting on the subject of the thread.I do think that SARS is a very serious issue .And needs to be brought under control. jp1
(China shows only 266 still in treatment, though there are reports that the hospitals in Beijing are full of suspected cases... even though the disease is supposedly centered in another far away province). as of yesterday -April/15- China has reported 1,435 SARS cases, that's about half of the global total. 64 persons died so far. HKG reported 1,232 cases, out of which 243 people have recovered and 56 died. If those figures come close to reality than the situation in tiny Hongkong is really more alarming than anywhere else. chilli13
For a fresh LOS perspective it has just been reported that some 357 people in the kingdom has been killed in the traffic over the last 3 days. The final songkran deathtoll last year was around 550. So far only 2 died from SARS in LOS... Songkran death toll Current affected SARS areas On WHO it was today reported the coronavirus responsible for SARS was finally singled out so treatment should soon be available... peace
samak
NO PEACE! this comparison is insane and a insult against those driving in LOS! what is the death toll in UK on - people driving home drunken from pubs - people with heart desease caused by fish and chips consumption - people consuming alcohol and viagra trying to overcome the infamous "no sex we are british" image - people bored to death by parliament debates to first league footbal matches
