Most are dark in color and as you say the grape variety and or blends can enhance the hue of the wine. Also the beume can have some effect in colder climates. The non french varieties you metion are lighter i agree and taste like petrol imo. Sorry if i upset you it was my intention All great with cheese however although i prefer a good port.
