Interesting results.

Recent political trends accepted, I thought citizenship might have been an interesting for retired / semi retired folk allowing them to dispense with visa runs and own their own homes.

The guy I met who had one fully intends to live out his retirement in Thailand.

I believe that a major requirement to apply for Thai citizenship is that one must show tax returns for at least 3 years - hence a Work Permit is essential and I do not think a retired person could apply.

I arrived here in 1971 when Lifetime Residence and Work Permits were still being issued - I have both.

I did apply for - and receive - Thai citizenship several years ago - the main reason I decided to do that was because at that time, if one was working in Thailand, a Tax Clearance Certificate was required before leaving the Country; this was a major irritant since I objected to being interviewed about my lifestyle and spending habits by someone just out of University!
