Poipet

So, I've decided to just take a bus to the Thai border with Cambodia. The infernal thing leaves at 6:30 am from Kao San, but at least it gets me back the same day.

I understand I have to get a visa to Cambodia which will cost 1000 bht. My question is...Can I get one at the border? Between taxi fare and time spent, going to thyeir Embassy here is an awful waste of time.

Any other hints would be welcome, as it's my first time there.

Thanks.

Jack,

Well, I've never met you (which makes it obvious that I don't know Jack Schitt) but I wish people would just give the information when they know it. Otherwise half the posts would be (see search page 47) Who needs that?

For the record, I did do the search you mentioned, and while it did say you could get a visa at the Phnom Penh airport, I didn't see whether that was also possible at Poipet.

So, if anybody knows, I would appreciate an actual answer and not a treasure hunt. And, please, be kind, as I truly don't know Jack Schitt!

The same questions get asked time and time again and generally every few weeks. If you've searched and cant find then say so. In a lot of cases if the individual spent 5 minutes looking either here or on the internet they would have the answer.

Not pointing at you, but some people are too lazy to use their search engine to find basic information and want it handed to them on a plate.

I have it on fairly good authority that you can get the visa at the border. However, I have been told of several scams, and various shakedowns that could prove a major pain as well as time consuming. I also have it on good authority that there will be a long line to get this visa at the border. I am told it is best to have it in hand when you arrive, as this will omit many of the aforementioned problems. I am concidering the same trip in a few weeks. Let me know how you make out!

Yes, you can get a visa at the border at Poipet. The cost is 1,000 baht or $20 US but sometimes they scam you for a few hundred extra baht if you just do a quick turnaround for your visa. You might want to check out some of the visa run companies, there are many here in Pattaya and I would imagine even more in Bangkok. Usual fare is 2,500 baht and you get back the same day. The fare includes the cost of the Cambodian visa.

Thanks, Lucky.

That's probably what I'll do unless I can force my lazy butt down to the Embassy on Monday after the NFL football games end.

Next time I may do the visa run tour. I just bought a ticket from an agency on Kao San for 400 baht, so I'll probably escape for less than 2000, but without somebody to hold my hand. Hopefully there will be an old hand on the same trip to help.

Regarding my post about the search issue:

I do realize that some people post inane questions over and over again, but I think the visa situation in Poipet is a touch more unique than "What's a barfine?" or "What's an Eden's Club?" For somebody to actually do a search (albeit not a good one, since the pages he directed me to DIDN'T have the info) just so he could post a sarcastic reply, especially if he knows the info already...I mean, like, get a life. I, for one, get no pleasure out of reading the "just do a search you moron" posts which seem to come more frequently than the inane questions themselves. In fact, there are probably very few questions that haven't been answered at some point. Should we institute a no questions policy? Also, when dealing with visa issues, the procedures can sometimes change quickly and to re-read a post from 2 months ago could give you wrong information. But, in the, end, aren't we here to help each other, and learn from each other? Just my cent and a half.

See you at the DC Sunday!

You can get the visa at the border and they charge 1,000 baht and don't accept US$. You have to drop them Baht100 for doing a turnaround otherwise you have to go through all the immigration proceedure and actually enter the country and then exit it again. It's 100 baht well spent as you'll be through and back in only 1/2 hour. I've only ever encountered queues at the Thai side with all the Thais wanting to get out and go to the casino.

Did this run a couple of months ago. Got bus from BKK (cost around 300 baht each way I think) BUT this got us there at five to 5 and the gate shuts at 5. Much running and scribbling on forms and time wasting by officials happy to see a farang in a panic. I was made to cross into Cambodia - racing across the bridge knocking locals all over (possibly damaging international relations beyond repair) paid the 1000 baht + the 100 baht extra and then sprinted back just as they were closing the gate. Raced back to the bus station to catch the last bus back which I made by about 5 minutes.

If you need to be tight on expenditure then do it this way, if you have a heart condition then don't.
