Funny, most of us pasty white people spend all of our time in the sun, trying to get brown. The Brown people are putting on makeup trying to get white :dunno::doah:

some of us pasty white people have learned that spending all our time in the sun only results in sunburn, premature aging of the skin, skincancer, saggy tits and a mushy brain.

but then, nothing is quite as amusing and entertaining as giving a formerly pasty now turned bright red mate of ours a good slap on the back followed by a bearhug.

Without delving into the obvious racial undertones of the business, I asked a buddy of mine who does film and television production work in Hollywood and he tells me that on camera/film and from a make-up perspective white/lighter skin toned people look better. The camera loves them. Easier to add color tones to a white complexion than a dark one with makeup. He says you have to use a hell of a lot of lighting to bring dark skinned individuals to life on the camera. I am sure this was the traditional thinking years ago but there have been great strides in both lighting and makeup. You are also seeing more people of darker skin tones in mainstrream movies.

I am sure Thailand has it's own rationales for the people they select to be in front of the camera.

What I really don't like about the current crop of Thai media entertainers is that they all sort of look the same in physical composition and styling, the chicks are way too skinny. pretty faces but no ass and no tits. I really can't tell one from the other as they lack any diversity in looks.

My current (Asian) girlfriend  is dark brown (got mistaken for a dusky Issan hooker when we checked in to a hotel in BKK once, much to her annoyance and my delight ::) and positively hates it. She spends loadsamoney on hokey "skin whitening" cosmetic creams and lotions, all of which I'm sure have about as much efficacy as would smearing Hellman's mayonnaise on your coupon. :doah:

My (also Asian) ex-missus, on the other hand, was whiter than white and very proud of it. :o She did modelling and appeared on TV (eg. reading the local weather forecast :clown:), and reckoned the whiteness of her skin was one of the factors that made her in demand. :hubba: She'd never go out for long in the sun, used to wear long sleeves and carry a parasol :clown: if she just nipped to the convenience store. :dunno: When she drove the motor in the bright sun, she'd wear the long sleeves again plus cotton gloves :doah: so her arms and hands wouldn't get tanned! ::

I used to try to drag her to the beach in the midsummer: she'd sit in the motor reading a book, sweating bullets with the car AC on, :applause: while I sat on the sands for hours getting skin cancer, drinking beer and ogling the young bikini-clad chicks.

I once read an article on topic of why black models used in advertising tend to be those with light complexions. One ad exec tried to make what I thought was a feeble claim about it being more difficult to photograph dark complexions.

However, last year I took a photo of three of my drinking buddies, two whities and very dark black guy. It turned out that the contrast was such (not sure if "contrast" is correct technical term) that there was no detail to the black guy at all -- could not make out nose, eyebrows, etc.

To be fair, I think my aversion to taking pics may be because my picture never looks right (I'm very dark skinned). If the lighting is bad, my features can't be made out. Lighting, etc. aside, there was always an element of light skinned is better that is pervasive in the media for years here and abroad from what I've heard.

Despite the rumoured aversion to 'brown', I can personally state that lots of the BGs don't have such problems...

:grinyes: who do you think gave me my screen name?

Are you talking about pix shot in LOS, Steve? If so, I don't think it's the lighting or your skin colour that's coming into play. :nono: I reckon the heat and humidity play havoc with the camera's internal mechanisms? :: My picture "never looks right" either. :banghead: I'm white, but in every single photo I've seen of myself in Thailand I look like a bloated, perspiring, red-faced, :o slack-jawed, bloodshot-eyed, inebriated, :drunk: pie-eyed, fat fucking loser. :(

Must be the cameras to blame.

JJ,

Hahahahahahaha. I agree! They all look like the space creature aliens that come out of the spaceship at the end of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" don't they?!! :-) Big turnip heads, but with straight black hair. Too skinny. I mean WAY too skinny. Sickly looking. Pasty white unhealthy looking skin. Freaking clones really. The problem is the Thai media holds these women (and the fairy looking men whiteboy look krueng clones partly as well also) up as the epitome of Thai beauty, and the little brown masses of lasses buy into this bullshit and try to look the same by lightening their skin, (harmful) and straightening their gorgeous wavy hair (Why? I'll never know. Wavy long full hair is much sexier in my not so humble opinion than lank straight lifeless wispy hair.) to look like these anorexic Pillsbury Doughboy skinned alien clones of womanhood. I've seen more gorgeous nut brown and golden honeyed skinned women that were absolutely fabulous, exotic, and interesting and beautiful by nearly any man's standards around the country, most of them far from white, that I still think this area has more gorgeous women per square mile than most of the places of the world, with the exception of the downtown areas of some of the major cities of the world, and maybe the cornfed cowgirls I ran across recently in Cheyenne Wyoming. And most of these women are not dressed in fancy clothing and wearing any makeup.

What we see on Thai TV and in the magazines is the moneyed classes depiction of beauty. (Same in the US for many years.)
