Worried about high blood pressure

I went for a routine medical the other day, my blood pressure was 135/90 ... I am 31 years of age.

The doctor said this was too high for someone of my age.

He suggested pills to reduce it if I could not get it down.

I am 6ft tall and weigh in at 14.5 stone. I drink daily and smoke (something i am trying to quit), I also until recently used hard drugs recreationally.

My lifestyle is not good.

I have been told once you are on the blood pressure pills, thats it you are on them for life. Surely 30 is far to young for them?

I am inclined to think it is genetic. Has anyone had any direct experience of lowering their blood pressure through natural methods, ie losing weight etc or am I on a hiding to nothing?

Thats whats so puzzling, the nurse who subsequently saw me said she got hers down. I know lots of people who have the same lifestyle as me and their reading is fine.

I am inclined to just alter my lifesyle, although I throroughly enjoy mine and always have. Have to cut out the booze and salt.

Apparently the blood pressure pills make you inclined to beiong impotent. That is a big factor in not wanting to explore that route

I'm surprised the doctor suggested the pills. I was border-line hbp, just as you, at your age. Doctor in the US told me to give up caffeine, including chocolate..... I didn't, but cut down to 1 cup a day.

I did some reading up on the problem and found that the 90 level is purely arbitrary. A serious level might be 100 and over. So that made me less worried.

That was about 15 years ago. Now I'm usually at 135/90. But on occassion I've dropped to 130/80.

There are so many things that can affect blood pressure and it can vary from hour to hour. (I think one indication of a problem is if one side (lef/right arm) is significantly different from the other side. But that doesn't mean if they are nboth high it is not a problem. This just shows that there IS definitely a problem of some sort.)

No way would I take the pills if I were you.

But I'm not a physician, and there is at least one physician on this board.

There are many natural things you can take for blood pressure before you go the route of prescription drugs.

Garlic has been proven to lower blood pressure......celery is also good , salmon oil......check out one of the websites on alternative medicine for a full list of things to take and do

your blood poressure is only borderline at the moment and usually they check this for a few months as blood pressure can change a fair bit

I was diagnosed with hypertension at the age of 21. I was fit as a fiddle ( 70-75kg) and exercised 2 hours every day. Genetics

Since the age of 25 I have been on blood pressure medication. Blopress 8-16 mg a day. Other than the monthly costs, I really dont mind. ( 1000B a month)

My pressure was about 140/90. Similar to yours. Boarderline high blood pressure.

Next time you are in BKK. Get a check up at Payathai 2 hospital. The cardiac center is the best in the country and is affiliated with Harvard University. My cardiologist is top notch. Graduated from Harvard, perfect English and has a good sense of what is I want.

I presume you could reduce your BP by losing weight. Age really does not matter. I had a cousin who dropped dead of a heart attack at the age of 25.

This is the Best Med I have been on. Dr. did not want to put me on Beta Blockers since they can make your "equipment" a little flat and even Viagra can not help. WIth teh Ace Inhibitors I had the dry cough. But not too bad. This one is perfect.

I would presume if you forgot it for a few days your pressure would go back up. Dont think it is too dire. Took me a few months to get into the routine of taking it and I forgot about 20% of them at the biginning
