pattaya127
Apparently, the disaster is being played up more more in the west than here ------------------------- No, i don't think it's being played up. And it's good, because no one can tell that western people were indifferent to the suffering "somewhere" on the other side of the world. It's just that people are in no doubt that the disaster was multi-continental, and it impressed those who have very little idea where is Phuket, or simply see "disaster in Thailand" as disaster around Thailand. I doubt that those who have a geographical/personal knowledge of Thailand would worry sick for someone in Chiang Mai or BKK. There are also those who wish to show concern, because it's the "right" thing to do, without looking too much at a map.

SiamIAm
Wouldn't the Thai government what the highest possible death toll to leverage more money out of the international aid packages? You know at least 1/2 that money will never see the light of day once the government gets their hands on it...
pattaya127
And maybe, half the money pledged (that's all it is now) will not find its way, according to the UN aid coordinator.
gummigut
Again, PM Thaksin has stated unequivocally that Thailand does not need or want any monetary aid. End of story. Gah. <<burp>>
