elef
If it depends on taxes/duties or not australian and californian wines are cheaper in Thailand compared with european or south american wines. Or rather you can get a not-so-bad wine from Australia or USA instead of a table wine from France, Italy and Spain.
Guest
how will the thai government count the taxes? will it be taxes on import prices, or will they charge taxes on alcohol percentage? I mean an expensive australian wine from 14 % alcohol will ad lower taxes, when they charge on alcohol instead on income price?.... then it can be good deal to buy the expensive wines? not? drogon
Just my 2 satangs to this post - first I have to say that a "good" wine does cost some money either in Europe or elsewhere. - Thailand is not known as a wine-producer country so the economy tends to favorise "local-production" alcohols. - As I am a both addicted to TG and wine I talked with some "european restaurants owner" the calcul for having a good quality wine in bangkok is quite simple: - a good quality wine (either:french/chilian/australian etc) costs between 15-30 euros you add the transport fee, then the possible taxes and finally the profit taken by the restaurant => you undestand why it could cost so much.
