PM: Bring English teachers from South Asia

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said he was concerned about the quality of English teachers in Thailand and suggested more teachers from India, Bhutan and Sri Lanka be hired to teach the language in Thai schools.

Government spokesman Chalermdej Jombunud said Mr Thaksin felt English teaching was often ''boring'' and some Thai teachers may not speak the language well enough.

Mr Thaksin suggested the Education Ministry solve the shortage of qualified English teachers by employing teachers from South Asia to teach English and mathematics.

He said their salaries were also lower than native speakers from the West which made them more affordable for schools.

Mr Thaksin said English was now important in the globalisation era and was a tool of communication in cyberspace.

Most Indian and Filipino(a) teachers I know are quite good. They are inexpensive, professional and well qualified. Many would be in the 10-16K range, and most schools in Thailand would be able to afford them. They tend to stay at the schools for a long period, unlike many farang "teachers"

Gf is currently taking classes at a cheap English school. Teacher is Filipino. She will switch to another school because she cannot understand him. She understands English spoken by Americans and Europeans very well.

I have seen English majors from Taiwan in the Philippines: they didn't understand a word of Filipino English.

Taiwan is in a different league than rural thailand. Yes we would all like the kids to have people with M.Ed from good western universities, but unfortunately Thailand does not have the money for it. For a cheap alternative , asian english speakers are better than thais that will say only 1 in 10 words in English and the rest of it is in thai. The kids only get an understanding of some catch phrases and grammer points but have no useful skills in the use of the language with the typical Thai English teacher. With an Filipino at least the kids will have to speak English to the teacher.

PM: Bring flight instructors from Washington Square

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said he was concerned about the quality of flight instruction in Thailand and suggested more retired pilots from Washington Square be hired to teach the new pilots in Thai Airways flight schools.

Government spokesman Chalermdej Jombunud said Mr Thaksin felt flight instruction was often ''boring'' and some Thai Airways instructors may not "work the stick" well enough.

Mr Thaksin suggested that Thai Airways solve the shortage of qualified flight instructors by employing ex-CIA "pilots" from the Soi 22 area.

He said their salaries were also lower than actual pilots from real airlines, which made them more affordable for flight schools. "They are not 100% semi-drunken sots who boast of events that never actually happened. Maybe only 73%. And, they will work for beer."

Mr Thaksin said cheap pilot trainers are important in his three-month plan to make Thailand the "Heathrow of the East" and are also a vital tool in re-establishing Thailand's dominance of airspace, as well as of cyberspace.

Anybody remember the game of telephone, where you whisper something down a long line of people? When the last person repeats what he hears, it is generally a totally garbled, unintelligible version of the original words.

That's what you get when non-natives teach non-natives to teach non-natives...etc.

Hi KK,

good try but Thai Airways use the SAS school in Copenhagen and also SAS flight instructors. ::

Exactly. I'm sure the boys from Lone Staar would be much cheaper than those actual instructors from the SAS school. Save the cost of shipping the trainees to Copenhagen, too.
