Flashermac
You can buy the old 1 baht paper bills cheaply enough in coin and stamp shops. They were out of use by 1973, when I arrived, but 5 baht was a paper note. The first 5 baht coins came out around 1976 -- big nonagon shaped things. The government finally had to discontinue them because there were so many counterfeit ones being made. They were replaced by a round 5 baht coin that nowadays seems huge. The 10 baht notes are almost never seen now, but a few are still around. The government tried a 20 baht coin a few years ago, but it wasn't popular because of its size (about the same as the old 5 baht). So 20 baht has remained paper money. Wonder whose idea the 2 baht coin is. I'd say it's probably destined for a short life. Too easy to confuse with the 1 baht.
jack_schist
i picked up a 5 bht coin the other day that i had not seen before but it may not be that unusual. on the reverse side is a image of a dragon with something hanging from its mouth. kinda like the bow of an old boat? Flashermac
That's the older 5 baht coin with the bow of the royal barge Supanahong on the reverse. They haven't made any for maybe 10 years, but you still run across one on very rare occasion.
