For me, also, it has been more than a year since CR. That is a lot of drunken nights. But, if I remember correctly, there is a small guest fee at HDR. US$10?. Not much, relative to the $100 hooker cost. Ouch. But, let me emphasize that my sanuk-fiend buddies who have been there in the last six months have raved about the quality, particularly of the Colombian chicks.

I've never been to El Presidente. I like the convenience of not having to go outside the HDR hooker bar/hotel late at night, to get to an alternate hotel--due to safety concerns. I checked out the Balamarral, a couple blocks away towards the Grand Hotel, and it wasn't bad. But, maybe I'll take your advice and check out El Presidente. Thanks.

There were some pretty hot Columbianas there. But I need to correct your reference to 'El Presidente' hotel. It is the Hotel Presidente and if you call it anything else the taxi drivers will have no clue what you're talking about. You may very well need to use Hotel Presidente when searching for their web site (which provides an email for booking on line BTW).

As far as security, I know what you're talking about. Generally the walk from HDR to Hotel Presidente is not bad. Especially if you go direct for the walking street and then turn right. Really the big problem is if you walk from the HDR to that other pick up bar around the corner -- what is it -- Key Largo or something.

And you might consider trying off season too. Now is high season and girls won't come off that $100 vtombrown speaks about. The first time I went (August - rainy season) the girls were more willing to go for 20,000 colones (about $65). Most of the stunners will stick to the $100.

Be aware that most of the girls that work HDR are supporting children.

I am sorry that this is an old thread, but with something to add, better late than never.

Actually La Ceiba aint too bad. I live in Thailand but I havent experience "the charms" of Thailand if you know what I mean, but I think La Ceiba might have it beat by a nose.

It takes a different breed of explorer to make it there with danger around every corner, literally. It aint for the faint of heart. If you watch your back and dont carry too much dinero, everything is cool.

Semi pro girls are easy to find there. A typical way to score: Go down to the beach, find a young girl waiting and take her dancing, buy her a few drinks, get plastered, go to a late night eatery, chow down on cheap food then take her back to your Hotel. (I like the Hotel Paris near on the plaza, just $20 a night with cable tv from the US, air con, in room safes, and a great swimming pool! Two doors down is Pizza Hut and a little further away is Popeye's Chicken) Give her a 100 lemps(close to $6) in the morning using the excuse it is for a taxi/buy lunch/whatever. She will make your bed and tidy the room before she leaves

The pros will cost you 200 lemps($12) if they like you for all night. 300 to 400 lemps($18 to $24) if they don't like you. You pick them up at the bars, and of course they have no such thing as a bar fine. You negotitate with the girl, you pay the girl, no one else is involved in the transaction. (The idea of barfines is something total unfamiliar to me.)

I liked Dieter's Bar and it is a shame that he got killed. He knew how to run a bar and take care of his customers. He saw I was a newbie to the sanuk scene back in 1997, he set me up with my first girl(a sexy half garifuna girl), one who would take good care of me. 200 lemps for all night. I could get plastered at his bar and know that he would safely get me home, I could pay the bar bill in the morning, no need to worry about carrying money to the bar and worrying about making it back to my hotel while I was drunk. God I miss that place.

The TV show Americas Most Wanted last night devoted about 20 minutes to American men who go to Costa Rica for young girls and boys. Gave John Walsh another chance to harp on pedos and show provacative shots of underage kids being marketed to undercover investigators. I don't like pedos either, but this piece did not seem to give a balanced report of the sex scene or general life in CR. Unfortunately, every country has some pedos.

I live in Thailand myself but had to add that my one trip to La Ceiba, Honduras was my worst sanuk-style vacation by far. For me that place had nothing to recommend it, no beaches and although the girls were cheap, that is one place where you definitely get what you pay for :-(

well guys, ive been living in the western caribbean the last 7 years (cayman islands) ,so have had the opportunity to visit most of the countries on this post. leaving for good in september, heading back to the uk for 2 weeks , then its off to LOS for a 6 month vacation-(if your gonna do it - do it right -lol).

costa rica is definately the sanuk capital of this region - but you need money cause its not cheap.asking price is $100!

all the posts seem to have got it right- delrey is the hub and its the place to stay. not gonna go on about it too much , cause im doing a farewell trip there july 6 - july 15 and plan to do a detailed report on this board with the all the up to date info when i get back.

i have heard that delrey has bought key largo, and plans to turn it into a casino and luxury condos - to be confirmed though. also 2 new bars a short walk from delrey seem to be doing well - cheetas( a gentlemens club ) and hotel tropicana.

anyway, like i said - full report to follow . one point i would like to make - if you do visit CR, then try to take a little time off from sanuking to see the country - it is a beautiful place and spending 1 week in a hotel bar (as much fun as it is) is still a loss- just my opinion!

la ceiba is not really my scene , getting dangerous, very dirty- but it is cheap. to be honest, i prefer it to panama - but only just. cuba - u gotta try it - great people, sexy women, and they seem content - so dont believe all that the miami cubans tell you.

anyway, hopefully in a few months i can sit down in a bar in bkk with some of you guys and compare sanuk tales- check back in mid july for my report on costa rica- everyone keep posting - happy sanuking to all.

"but I think La Ceiba might have it (Thailand) beat by a nose."

IMHO, I don't know how you can compare the two. La Ceiba is a dangerous dirty dump compared to Thailand. And, as far as I'm concerned, (ie., IMHO) you can throw those overweight Garafuna women back into that dirty ocean. Ugh! But to each his own. Chok Dee

A friend recently returned from travels in Central America. Your description of semi-pros in La Ceiba sounds alot like his experience in Granada, Nicaragua. He said the people are dirt poor, but happy that things are finally starting to get better (end of civil war/democracy) for their country. Money was never even mentioned by the girls.

This is going to sound morbid but he also mentioned, at least a few years ago, there was a real shortage of young men, due to the war, which may have been a contributing factor to the girls' availability.

Off topic, but I thought I'd throw this out for comment, in case anyone has been to Granada.

I've just read somewhere on an NGO site, that the Costa Rican beachtown of Cahuita was popular amongst surfers, eco tourists and "filthy sex turist". Anyone know anything? I feel filthy...
