Poi Pet

Did a visarun there last week and explored some myself.

Now first to get a little gripe of my chest.

If someone actually asks for info, specifically writes this in his post .... answers like .... "you don't want to go there because my mate says so" or the other reasons provided for not going, are not really what that person is looking for. He is looking for info on where it is, not on whether he should or should not go!

You either have info in which case you do or do not give it. Or you just refrain from posting.

Now for some info at least.

I took a motodop at approx 12.00 who had approached me for girls. He quoted prices which were imho high 400bt for Khmer and 500 bt for Vietnamese. So of we went.

If you come out of the casino's we went straight on to the trafficcircle and then took the road that was heading on the opposite out of there (so basically straight) we then went for approx 1 klik and then made a leftturn to the main market area. Now most of Poipet is 2 story shophouses. There are some 4/5 story shophouses that stick out though even from a distance. These are the places around the market that we visited. All were named ... xxx guesthouse ... but they looked shut and were new buildings. This combination is basically what you should be looking for when looking for brothels (relatively tall building, guesthouse, shutdown, but new look).

We went to 4 houses before I gave up. There were approx 8 girls to the building. Most of them still sleeping and they refused to wake them all up. So the choice was from 2-4 girls usually. The girls looked low quality and some looked very old and some might have been to young. I have been spoiled with choice in Bangkok, so I wouldn't touch any of these girls. I had hoped there would be at least one looker over the 4 houses I visited but none.

The motodop also looked unhappy as he said there was only one more house and he had promised to bring me for free (as offcourse he would get a commission). So I decided to make his day and gave him a 100 baht to bring me back to the border so I could get back into Thailand. He was happy and I am happy. I now know what to look for and can do it by myself if I ever wanted to.

One more thing to add though. Poipet smells very very badly.

Poipet is well known in Cambodia--an AIDS-ridden country--as being the number one place in the country to catch HIV. up to you.

Who is the source of your information and what are the figures?

The source of my information is the 15 Cambodian health care workers--including several MDs--I trained in Poipet (for the organization CARE) on how to do interactive AIDS-awareness activities with casino workers, in Poipet in the spring of 2003. They came from all over the country and between them had a great deal of experience dealing with HIV-positive people in Cambodia.

There are no "figures" because the idea that "Poipet is a good place to catch HIV" is the opinion of experienced Cambodian public health workers (and many other Cambodians) and not a published statistic.

Notice I said in my post "well known in CAMBODIA," I never claimed it was a statistically-based fact. like I said, up to you.
