Thailand will not be a target

More from the Bangkok Post. I am sure its a matter of translation and context. Thailand is already a target of terrorists in the South.

BTW, if you can't pack toothpaste or shampoo on your carry-on, you can pack tooth poweder or baking soda instead. The baking soda (AKA Washing soda - Sodium Bicarbonate) can also be used to wash your hair.

Kongsak: Terrorists 'won't target Thailand'

(TNA) - Thai Interior Minister Kongsak Wanthana Friday said he believed that no terrorist plot would target either Asian countries or spread into Thailand's insurgency-plagued deep South.

He commented in response to Thursday's foiled terrorist plot to blow up aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States.

Air Chief Marshal Kongsak said he was confident that 'copycat attempts' would not be made in Thailand in particular, given that the kingdom is not a target of terrorism and it is a country that has helped many different groups of people and strongly uphold the equality of all religions.

"I believe they understand that the unrest in the Thai deep South is our internal problem and won't try to link it to any terrorist network," Marshal Kongsak said.

However, the minister said that Thai government agencies responsible for internal security have planned stringent preventive measures against any possible incidents, especially concerning aviation and airport safety.

"Should any problem happen," Marshal Kongsak cautioned, "the nation's positive image would be negatively affected."

I like this line.

He is right, because it's already there. But of course he doesn't want to address in public the major question: will it spread to BKK and Phuket?

:banghead:

And of course Bali didn't had anything to do with Muslim terrorists.

Image is everything...

<< Well considering Thailand has killed more muslims than most of the world. I think they better rethink their point of view. >>

I'd have thought a lot more had been killed in the war between Iraq and Iran, not to mention the wars between India and Pakistan, the Gulf War of 1992, the US & UK in Iraq right now ...

:dunno:

They have many, many problems. There are hundreds more or less violent demonstrations every year in China and some bombings for example by Uighur separatists in Xinjiang.

Most uprisings are local and usually against corrupt officials and criminal businessmen.

The Chinese authority uses every means to suppress any group which is not controlled by the communist party. Means are jail, labor camps, death penalty, locked psychiatry, hired thugs, threats against the persons concerned and their familis e.g.

Of course _any_ opinion voiced in newspapers, at the internet, in books, e.g. which doesn't conform with the government will be silenced as well using the means described above. Just to report a

natural disaster or a small demonstration will have severe consequences. Losing the job is probably the smallest punishment.

A few weeks ago an advocate of a group of local farmers that got scammed by officials was severely beaten by hired thugs (policemen?) a few mights after he spoke about the case to German tv. Now he is completely paralyzed below his neck. An "investigation" by the government could not find any trace of an ambush and concluded that he inflicted the wounds by his own hands. Also the government protested the financial support from Germany for a life saving operation.

Just have a look at Tibet for to learn how China deals with non consenting people...
