exit2dos
Has anyone ever seen shadow puppet shows, like they have in Bali, in Thailand?
Pescator
I`ve watched a few shows in Trang, which in LOS is renowned for the Nang Thalung, shadow puppet theatre. I have no idea if it is anything like the ones you have watched in Bali, as I was never there. It didn`t exactly rock my boat watching the show, but I guess you should have been brought up with this tradition in order to understand and appreciate the subtleties. And besides, I am probably a cultural ignorant anyway. cheers hn

exit2dos
I didn't think they had shadow puppets in Thailand. So they do, I gather. Thanks for your help settling an argument.
Nervous_Dog
No worries, if you go to chatuchak market you can buy them, note the style is similar across S E Asia, more famous in Indonesia, but common in Malaysia and Thailand as well. Note the Garuda is a official royal emblem in Thailand, and it is commonly thought also as indonesian DOG
MooNoi
The home of shadow puppets in Thailand is in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The current living master of shadow puppets in Thailand lives there, and you can actually go to his home (with prior arrangement) and he'll put on a show for you. They don't speak much English, so some Thai or a Thai friend to help you is useful. I've been there, and while the show is kind of cute, (but not really mind-boggingly amazing!), he has a museum of shadow puppetry there which is worth a look. elef
In Phatthalung they say that the art was invented there 17 hundred something, I've seen that fact mentioned in a guide book too. Of course not of any importance...
MooNoi
I hope that's 1700-something in Buddhist years. They've been around a lot longer than 250 years.
