Regards, SD I am often here just on a visa exempt stamp or tourist visa as I work elsewhere so cannot apply for a Thai DL afaik. Hence the need for an IDP which I can also use in other countries. An IDP is compulsory to drive in Thailand unless you have a Thai DL. Last year I was hit by a motorcylce taxi who put a dent in the Mrs' car I was driving. The motorcycle driver was in the wrong, paid a fine at the police station and the car insurance covered all costs. All I had to show was my IDP. So it helps to have one.
