Never heard of a parachute? He didn't "fall out" either. The ejection seat blew him out, which meant the canopy went too.

When I perform aerobatics in a propeller driven CAP 10 we are required to wear parachutes so surely they were??

 

Maybe he was wearing a parachute and something happened during ejection like Goose in Top Gun.

What use is a parachute when the ejector seat deployed whilst the aircarft was inverted?

ejector seats self righting, rarely a troubled aircraft be horizontal, so regardless of pitch the are supposed to self right, at least in the demo's clip I've seen.

Thats assuming that they were at a high enough altitude for the seat to have time to adjust itself.

 

There is also talk that it was a test flight after major servicing and due to a fault or the seat not being replaced properly it slid down whilst inverted.

This triggered the explosive that removes the canopy and with nothing to hold it in place the seat slid out and the Navigator hit the fin.

 

I don't know if it was the fin that killed him because the parachute deploys automatically unless the parachute or the box holding it was ripped off by the fin.
