Saphan Kwai--Short Report

I first learned about Saphan Kwai in a post a couple of years ago put up by Suadum and had been determined to get there during one of my trips. Since not much has been posted about this venue, I thought Iâ??d give a go at posting my experiences and what I think Iâ??ve learned about the place.

 

Saphan Kwai, apparently, has been around since the early 1970â??s (at least). I guess you could call it a Thai Soi Cowboyâ?¦or a soi populated by bars patronized by Thai men in their 20â??s and 30â??s. The bars I visited had go-go dancers, but not what youâ??d expect in SC or NEP.

 

Let me digress:

 

It was a Friday night and my good friend who lives in BKK offered to take me to Saphan Kwai. (Iâ??d mentioned that I wanted to see it at least one time.) While he acted as the tour guide, a whore of mutual acquaintance was enlisted to act as interpreter (as most of the girls know â??zeroâ?? English and only the mamasans/managers had a very basic understanding.

 

Our whore friend, whom we both met when she worked at SC, was now working at NEP. So he picked her up and we took the BTS from Nana to Mochit where heâ??d parked his car. From there, it was about a 10 minute drive back to Saphan Kwai. (Ordinarily, youâ??d get off the skytrain at the Saphan Kwai station and exit to the right (east) and then go back in the direction from which you approached the station.

 

Now, Saphan Kwai is NOT a street or anything like that. It is an area like â??Sukhumvitâ? or â??Silomâ? or â??Siamâ?Â.

 

The Saphan Kwai bars that we visited were on two different streets, separated by only 200 or 300 yards. The first bars we went to were located right off Phaholycthin Road (which is the road the BTS follows above). You know you are on the right soi, if you see the bright lights at the end of this short soi.

Into Best Bar we went. Just inside the bar to the right, maybe 6 or 7 young women were sitting in chairs and wearing street clothes. On the left of the entrance was the bar service area. It was kind of like entering one of the smaller bars in Soi Cowboy, except that it opened up after about 20 feet or so. There, a larger room set up with tables and booths awaited us. We picked a booth that comfortably seated all three of us and would accommodate any â??companyâ? that might be available. A single stage featuring one dancer was in front of us. Wearing a bra and panties, she was an average SC girl in every respect.

 

Looking around, there were only about 8 other customersâ?¦all thai. From the way they were dressed, Iâ??d say they were â??working classâ?Â. Maybe some taxi drivers or factory workers? Who knows. In any event, nobody seemed to notice or care that a couple of farang had wondered inside.

 

We ordered 3 large Heinikenâ??s at 130 baht each. I was then told by our interpreter that if we wanted some female company we had to go back to the entrance and point out which one(s). I picked out two and my escort picked out one. Got kind of cozy 5555555555555. The girls were polite, but quiet. None spoke any English, but were generous with their smiles. It turns out that you are not expected to buy â??lady drinksâ?Â. The girls drink what you drink. A glass is brought and beer from your bottle is poured if they want beer. Of course, you can buy them water or cola or whatever, but those are not at the inflated prices you see in farang venues. So, how do the girls make their money? Easyâ?¦you pay 80 baht for every 50-60 minutes the girls sit with you. And the timer starts when their asses hit the chair/booth. Through our interpreter, we found that the girls will go with customers ST for 1500 and LT for 2000â??paid in advance. My escort said that heâ??s had good and bad experiences with this system in Saphan Kwai, meaning there are â??runnersâ? there too. Through my interpreter, the girl I was most interested sad that it would be â??no problemâ? to stay to 10 or 11 in the morningâ??or later if desired. Actually, the girl I was most interested in was dancing. FABULOUS body ! Upon commenting, I was told by my interpreter that the dancer was xxteen.. Well, I wasnâ??t about to make a selection so early anyway.. It was only about 10:30 p.m. So, 980 baht lighter, the three of us left to check out some other bars.

 

Two things of note at Best Bar when we landed there: first, only one girl was dancing at any given time and they danced for about 20 minutes. Second, in the hour that we were in the back, many more girls had reported for duty up frontâ?¦and some were quite young and attractive. So, maybe 9:30 is a bit early, even for a Friday night.

 

Here is a copy of the front and back of the biz card for Best Bar. Once you get here, youâ??re set for the rest of the bars. Theyâ??re all within a shout of eachother.

 

Across the street from Best Bar was a place all lit up and looking like a â??happeningâ? joint. So, inside we go past security and was I surprised. Put two Nana discos together and the joint was the same sizeâ?¦maybe bigger. It looked more like a club than a go-go joint. There were maybe 5 or 6 stages placed around the room which featured mostly booth-type seating. The dancers were more like the coyote dancers except not exceptional in any respect. (I mean, Iâ??d fuck â??em, but I prefer the SC dancers cuz I can get a better look before I rent.) Anyway, the place was loud, smoky, and packed. Unlike the patrons back at Best Bar, this joint seemed to be patronized by Thai guys in the same age bracked, but maybe office workers. Quite a few tables had female company, so I presumed that they were working girls. In any event, we didnâ??t even sit downâ?¦only took notes.

 

Well, back to the car and around a couple of corners. We really didnâ??t need to take the car, except my buddy wanted to fill up at a gas station and have his wheels washed while we irrigated our throats some more. And those places were right across the street from the gas station. To get to this stretch of soi, just head toward the bright lights in the first picture and go right about 100 yards. The street turns to the left; another 200 yards or so and there are more bars.

 

This stretch of soi is pretty busy, so you can take your chances in crossing it. A tout or two offered to escort us across. No problem. He risks his life for a small commission, I guess. (Coming back, he wanted 10 baht. No problem Somchai. He went out in the middle of the street like he was a squad of Thai cops and stopped the traffic. LOL !)

 

Anyway, I only went to one bar along this section of bars. It was a small bar and no customers when we entered. Again, one stage and one dancer. A â??5â?Â, but fuckable. (Had B cups.) Sitting down, the mamasan brought over two girls. My escort got a good oneâ?¦best Iâ??d seen so far. Had a â??coyote dancerâ? uni on: short shorts and sleeveless, scoop-necked t-shirt that revealed some very, very luscious-looking tits. And she was a solid 8/9 in the face. Beautiful complexion also. Anyway, without asking, this other gal sits down next to me. Immediately, my escort protests to the mamasan that the girl was not invited. (Remember, the timer starts when the girlâ??s ass hits the vinyl?) Mamasan was not happy. Turns out that my escort really had the â??horniesâ? for this gal sitting with him. And I couldnâ??t blame him at all. Sheâ??d get top baht in Soi Cowboy. But she informed him that she was a senior at some uni and was only doing the service work for schoolâ?¦that she didnâ??t go with customers. Oh well, other fish in the sea.

 

It was getting to be about 11:30. My escort wanted to continue exploring some joints heâ??d visited on prior trips. But I wanted to get back to SC before all the girls still available, like Cinderella in reverse, had turned into 10â??s. LOL ! So my escort continued his search and I and our interpreter grabbed a cab back to Sukhumit (a short 50-60 baht fare of about 15 minutes).

 

Iâ??d recommend checking out this place if youâ??re going to be in BKK for a while, even if just to experience something different. Obviously, if youâ??re only going to be in town for a couple of nights or even a week you will probably want to give it a pass since it is not likely you will score there. On the other hand, there are some very fuckable girls there (quite a few 6â??s and a few 7â??sâ?¦even an 8/9) I think you could probably do okay if you spoke even a little bit of Thai, but the offerengs are not of the overall quantity found at SC/NEP.

I find the girls there to be more the Thai idea of beauty (lighter skin, more Chinese looking) which appeals to me. But you are correct, it is a blue-collar area. The *really* hot (IMHO) girls of that type are not found there...

 

Another tip is that of you do go, avoid payday weekend (first weekend on the month). You will be ignored and the place will be very crowded!

Now that you mention it, I think it was RCA2 that my buddy was insistent that we visit. I opted to go back to SC. Your impression that the girls tend to be of a lighter skin color coincides with my observation, now that I think about it. I think "payday" has a lot to do with attitude in a lot of Thai venues. And the week BEFORE "payday" has a lot to do with those attitudes as well. 555555555555

Well well. The story of the rest of the night on Saphon Kwai deserves a telling since it was one to the most unusual nights i have had on the town in bkk. after my buddy Hugh Hoy took off for greener pastures, I went on to three more bars on the south side of the street oposite the car wash. I flashed over and paid for the car wash and picked up my the key to my newly polished four wheel wonder, later on that story. at the corner bar I went into a booth next to the dance floor and it was now filled with about 4 to 6 dancers and noticed an absolute babe. A wink and a nod was all that was needed to bring her over to the table after she was done dancing. I speak enough Thai to work on my own and was about to make a contract for service. I had wanted to take her with me in the car but she was determined to go to a short time hotel. I just went along and the bouncer actually walked with us. They never or almost never see Farang here so they just wanted to make sure the gal was safe. Just a short walk across the street and we were cosy in our room. Rooms are much nicer here and much cheaper than about the SC area. This was dream incounter as this girl was five N's lovely... She took off as expected and I was off to recover the car. I had paid advance like 1500 so no need for taxi money are debate and no tip was expected. Was I surprized when I returned to the car and the battey was full on dead... could not push as it was a free wheeling automatic transmision. now it is close to 3 am and I am not going to leave a new car in a bad area over night so I got the now crowd of off duty bouncers and loafer to push the car to a better parking area. This parking spot was way off the road and very dark but would not get clamped or towed. I walked back out of the lot and who do i see but I girl I had bought out 2 months back, the only other girl I had ever bought out and she signed on to help me get jumper cables and a hot battery. She had a taxi driver signed up and a guy with a mega truck signed in a second and I was soon reving my engine to pump 45 amps into the ailing battery. My new sweet heart for the night was sitting with me in the reving car with the AC and the soft music playing. Turns out the parking lot by now is vacant and dark as it is now 4am. She gives me the best hummer of my life right there in the lot. I later give her a ride back to her home and leave her with a big tip. Rescued at the hands of a lovely Thai girl.... Again....

Thanks SuaDum Mr Black Shirt.... Oh what a night.... Off the beaten path for sure. My advice is to maybe avoid Saphon Kwia unless your bored and want a colorful experience.... I really prefer Soi Cowboy, or SC as it is refered to here.

Excellent, well written informative report, and with pics too! Nice. Been there and didn't really see the attraction myself, but can see how some would like it as a change from the farang bar scene once in a while. Thanks for the great post. Wish we'd see more like this one here.
