TheCorinthian
A Russian arms dealer accused of breaking U.N. arms embargoes by supplying weapons to African war zones was arrested Thursday in Bangkok, Thai police said. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,335437,00.html It sounds like this guy was the basis for the lead character in the really good movie, "Lord of War." Fidel
I can see an opening for Laos ... in the international criminal segment of the tourist trade.
Fidel
Hmmm... seems he was working in Iraq, despite being a well known criminal. Interesting. He was picked up on a charge related to supplying weapons to FARC in Colombia. This comes at a time when the Colombians are accusing the Chavez regime genocide for supplying weapons to FARC. Let's see if he enters a "plea bargain" and agrees to implicate the Chavez.

But I could only find an indirect connection to Iraq. http://www.motherjones.com/news/update/2004/09/09_413.html Maybe they could link FARC/Chavez to the US election? "They say the new president of their country will be (Barack) Obama," he writes, saying Obama rejects both the Bush administration's free trade agreement with Colombia and the current military aid program.> http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080306/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/colombia_farc_laptop_7;_ylt=AvkSf3P7uRzBJ91pNHMwosAE1vAI
Fidel
Chuck, the link is so important and obvious, I'm surprised none of the news agencies are joining the dots. So, one minute he's working directly for the US in Iraq, and they're protecting him. The next minute... the Colombians are accusing Venezuela of supplying FARC with weapons and US agents pick the guy up in Bangkok? He was apparently shopped by the UAE. One of the world's most notorious arms dealers, Viktor Bout, was arrested in a hotel here Thursday in connection with the procurement of weapons for the Colombian FARC rebels, the Thai police said. His arrest came a few days after a Colombian military raid into Ecuador on Saturday, during which the Colombian Army obtained a computer laptop belonging to a senior FARC commander. It was not immediately clear whether the two events were related. Source A coincidence?
chuckwoww
Give it a day or two and the editorials will start explaining the connection. There are even hints of a FARC uranium connection. Fifty kilos no less! I bet FOX can work Ahmedinajad in there too without much effort.
Fidel
How Boutâ??s empire forged its secret U.S. contacts is unclear. But, as U.S. intelligence and military officials believe, the reason may be as simple as Boutâ??s having the foresight to position his aircraft in the region. He was able to make his services available in the massive confusion that surrounded the supply operation, when no one had time to check the credentials of the many air operations vying for contracts. As Boutâ??s contracts became public, and the possible legal implications of continuing to deal with him were explained by the U.S. Treasury Department, the military lurched toward a response. Air Force officials reacted quickly, revoking the fuel allowance and persuading Federal Express to sever its contract. But the U.S. Army and other defense agencies insisted they had no responsibility to scrutinize second-tier subcontractors. Boutâ??s flights for KBR continued well into late 2005, and even expanded to include flights into Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. Several well-known Bout firms were finally banned from Iraq early this year by military officials. But Bout was suspected of shifting his operations to new firms, and U.S. officials fear that those companies may try to land lucrative U.S. contracts again. Source He was working for Halliburton. Yes. Now they're saying Chavez was offering Uranium to FARC. Watch this space!

Fidel
So he's working for Halliburton, based in UAE (US ally), picked up in Thailand (home to CIA torture centres in Udon), and the weapons were shipped into Colombia via Argentina and Uraguay, both countries that have "positive relations" with the US, not Venezuela, and has been indicted based on information picked up by the Colombians (major recipients of US aid).
