Steve
The American government didn't invade Iraq because the average American believed the wrong things about Iraq. England, and the rest of Europe didn't publicly say (and possibly not even privately) that the information and evidence the administration was pushing wasn't correct. All Europe did was debate whether to give inspectors more time to find WMDs and that invading wouldn't be the best course of action. Furthermore, the average American's believing the wrong things didn't force other countries into sending troops and aid as well. Blair believed it. Americans believed the wrong things. What are the average English person's excuse for allowing their troops to get involved? The average American's continuing misconceptions about Iraq isn't keeping the troops there either. Public opinion polls about being there would tend to favor that its unpopular and we should extracate ourselves from it. And again, its the same people that voted in the party opposed to the war into Congress. The same people who have given Bush one of the lowest approval ratings in recent memory. The percentage that believe such and such is interesting to note but has little if any bearing on why we went into Iraq and why we're still there. Flashermac
Political reality: Candidates toss it around without saying what they want to change. Years ago, there was a tale in the Marine Corps about a lieutenant who inspected his Marines and told the "gunny" that they smelled bad. The lieutenant suggested that they change their underwear. The "gunny" responded, "Aye,aye, sir. I'll see to it immediately." He went into the tent and said, "The lieutenant thinks you guys smell bad, and he wants you to change your underwear. Smith, you change with Jones. McCarthy, you change with Witkowsky. Brown, you change with Schultz. Change! Now get on with it." A candidate may promise change in Washington but the stink will remain.
