PGP experience

Like many board members I find myself in the position of storing large amounts of disgusting video files on my hard drive for â?? to protect his privacy we'll just call him OH- OH at OHs' request. Acts of sexual perversion so despicable that decorum prevents their discussion on an open forum.

I used Best Crypt some years ago, then Drive Crypt, Scramdisk and at least one other that I cannot remember the name of. Most recently TrueCrypt.

Just got the new PGP Desktop Home.

The most interesting feature so far is that the volume expands automatically and is not a fixed size. Or at least that is what the sales info said....

In the interest of protecting OHs' privacy, just how private do you think this is? It does not have the concealed volume feature that True Crypt does.

Would be very interested to hear of any experiences with it.

So far I like it.

It's good, haven't used it for a while but it did offer high level encryption...although anything short of quantum encryption is hackable...and even that is theoretically. So it's very safe on a day-to-day type basis. I guess it really depends on what you want to protect.

Most likely:

The authorities (remember an incident in the USA which was posted on the board) might ask you the encryption key...

Do not know the laws but I suspect that if you travel to let's say Iran, that they will certainly check your laptop for porn...

I suspect Thai law allows them to check for that too but then, why bring porn in Thailand...

About the security: I do not know specifically this encryption software but more than a few are said to be quite good.

Of course, if my brother decides to hack your laptop and watch your porn, I guess that he will have no problem to bypass the security software.

You mention True Crypt. I am not an expert in this stuff, but I have looked at TC and it seemed plenty good and very free.

Since you are familiar with it, what are its shortcomings that make you want to use something else?

Thanks,

GG
