Motorcycle Shops/Gear?

Zoot, I've not been to Indonesia yet but Scootering Magazine used to have articles about the custom scene there a few years ago. Also there are a couple of clubs in the PI apparently. In LOS I've seen a couple of scoots on Khao San with Bangkok Scooter Club stickers on them but after hanging around drinking a couple of beers at a nearby bar I didn't meet the owners. Met a scooterboy up in Pattaya who had an old shed of an Li. There I was walking to a bar and suddenly I heard that unmistakeable exhaust note, swivelled my head around aka Linda Blair in The Exorcist and saw this cat pull up on his bretta. He was chuffed with it. And it was a proper rustbucket. Said it cost him the equivalent of £700 sterling.

I've been into a couple of Scooter shops in Vietnam. There are still quite a few knocking around there. A few Westerners living there have bought machines and had them restored including some old 1950's early model Lambrettas, you know the Model D without panelling. I had a deal with a little Viet mutha to buy an SX but that went pearshaped as things often do in VN. If you ever go there, you'll notice lots of Vespas buzzing around, Sprints and the like, and bikes that have the body of a GS but inside they've got the innards of a 50 cc.

There's a Canadian guy who specialises in restoring Lambrettas in Saigon. He's got a site, which I had the Url to somewhere, Saigon Scooters I think it's called. His machines are fairly pricey, but if they're fully and properly restored then they're a lot cheaper than in the West. The Viets tend to cut lots of corners and some of their bikes aren't safe to be on the road. For instance, due to the poor road surfaces, over time the steel scaffold like under-frame of Lambrettas suffers with stress fractures and can snap. The Viets think nothing of chopping bits off and welding in new pieces and putting bikes back out on the road that should have been put out to pasture long ago.

Anyway, I'm just getting my old Li sorted out. Found a fairly local shop to do it as I've got past the stage of frustration with carbs and the like. Plus it's been years since I rode with a club so I can't rely on one of the lads.

Re that American club The Woosies, yeah it sounds pretty wild. It used to be pretty manic in the UK in the early '80's. I was at Scarborough in Easter 82 when there were supposed to have been between 8-12,000 scoots. I've seen nothing like it since. All that mods & rockers stuff was a load of crap. There were incidents between some of the clubs from different areas but that was mostly it. I was crashed out under the back of someone's car and was woken up by a rampaging mob of skins and mods legging some scooterboys through the carpark. All I remember was seeing 6ft 2 skins in dms bouncing over my head taking care not to stomp me as they set off in hot pursuit of some eejits. Some of the guys that used to ride back then were proper head-the-balls. One fella, a big skin, used to carry an axe under his saddle. Last I heard he was inside for armed robbery. Loads drove like mad fuckers and broke limbs left right and centre. Others drifted on from scoots to big bikes and at least one joined an outlaw bike gang... Others just fell away from the scene due to other committments... Boy was it fun.

Ahhhh Sukhumvit , I am loving this!!!!!! I never thought my 2 loves , Sanuk & Scoots would meet up on this board , even though I new there was loads of Brits & some MUST have been into the scene in the 80's , I am overjoyed to find the 2 guiding principles of my life have joined up .

I love the old scooter boy stories from the 80's , I read Scootering & there are allways great tales of woe from the 80's . We never had anything like that in Oz , even in the 80's when I had an old PX125 that I used to go to school on . There just aren't enough of us into it here to get serious - I mean 8-12,000 scoots , that is fuckin serious business!!! I really wish I had been to some of those legendary rallies , like the Isle of Wight when the riot happened & the beer tent got looted ! Classics ! I wish so much I could have shaken by booty at Wigan Casino or the Twisted Wheel , we can only dream of such things in Oz & Antarctica.

Thanks for info on Viet scoots , some get imported here , but they are shunned by the purists for the reasons you mention . I am glad to hear you are getting your LI back on the road , give me a run down on it ? Is it your old scoot , dragged outof the garage ? Or a recent buy ? What year & condition?? And please more stories of carnage & rallies !!!

Ahhh the memories ( or lack of them ! ) laugh.gif" border="0smile.gif" border="0

Rictic , you made me solid with your talk of actually visiting such places . So to answer you Q , YES I love the Northern Soul . I am into other types of music ( all types , nearly ) , but N Soul is a passion , it is hard to come by in Oz , but there are The Sydney Soul Sisters who spin the fine hip shakers monthly for the small crew who dig it & need a slippy slippy on a monthly basis , a good excuse to pull my knitted vest & wide, wide pants out of the wardrobe!!

Rictic I assume you will be posting some classic tales of debauchery at these places now - Pleeaase!

I know of the Sydney soul sisters, one of them Maria is now working in the UK.

Did you know there is such a thing as Australian National Alldayer, it was held just a few weeks back.

I can send you some MP3 discs of Northern if your intersted plus a few RA (Real Audio) discs. around 5000 plus tracks. I can also put you in touch with an email discussion list and an offshoot of that that emails RA's to you nearly every day, between 35 and 50 tracks per week.

Sydney, Melbourne and Perth have a number of dedicated expats and colonials that are into the music. They have by all accounts reasonably regular evenings.

As for debauched, my friends and I had a good thing going with a number of girls. We had an SC club with a very limited membership we were the (Name of town) Perverts Scooter Club. We actually got given the name by the other scooterists in the area cos of some incidents like a couple of lads coming round my mates house on a Sunday afternoon, One of the members answered the door in the nude, the guys asked if we could help them repair a scooter. The reply was no we're busy now but can offer you a fuck. We had 5 girls in the house partying with us.

We used to have sessions like that every weekend.

Rictic , I heard Maria was in UK a couple of weeks ago . The weekender you mention was in Melbourne & sounded like it went off as usual , too far to go at the moment , my only transport has ever been scoots & sometimes you just ain't up to it . But there is allways next year , I got a soul sisters postcard in the mail yesterday telling of their Soul Room nights for the next 6 months , one on this saturday so thats something to look forward to . Please PM me the e mail discussion thingy .Are you still into the scootering thing ?? smile.gif" border="0
