Bangkoktraveler
On the auspicious occasion of birth anniversary of Imam Mahdi (May God Hasten His Reappearance), Iran launched a new rocket to carry a satellite into orbit, IRNA reported. Experts said the launching represented a potentially significant if much-delayed step in Iran's efforts to join the international space club. Safir-e Omid, or Ambassador of Peace, is part of Iran's long held goal of developing a space program. Safir-e Omid is a satellite to monitor natural disasters in the earthquake-prone nation and improve its telecommunications. The satellite has also data processing capability. Iran hopes to launch four more satellites by 2010, the government has said. Link

rogueyam
After they lied about their rockets blasting off,(Photo Shopped pics) I would be loath to buy this one. You are wise to be skeptical of Iranian claims: Iran satellite launch a failure: U.S. official Aug 19, 2008 (Reuters) - Iran's attempt to launch a dummy satellite into orbit was a "dramatic failure" that fell far short of the country's assertions of success, a U.S. official said on Tuesday "The attempted launch failed," the official said. "The vehicle failed shortly after liftoff and in no way reached its intended position," the official said. "It could be characterized as a dramatic failure." Iran, embroiled in a standoff with the West over its nuclear ambitions, said on Sunday it has put a dummy satellite into orbit on a home-grown rocket for the first time, using a technology that could also be used for launching weapons. Iran says it has no nuclear-weapons plans and that it seeks nuclear technology to generate electricity. Iranian television showed the rocket on its launch pad, but did not show the actual lift-off. "The failed launch shows that the purported Iranian space program is in its nascent stages at best -- they have a long way to go," the U.S. official said. Link Rocket science is hard! ..
Whilst I do not necessarily disagree with the conclusion, why is the source of this article attributed to an anonymous "US official?" If we are so sure, then name sources...unless they have something to hide. Par for the pathetic course for this Admin -- even when they get it right, they do it wrong. Cheers, SD -- anonymous = propaganda in my book
chuckwoww
That 'anonymous US official' is one of the most overworked people in Washington. Some analysts suggest he's probably responsible for most of the unattributed information at the department of anonymous sources.
Bangkoktraveler
Iran says it was a success but the Pentagon claims it might have been a faiure. As for that un-named source, if there is un-collect pay, I claim I am that un-named source.
TheCorinthian
Most likely this the US official is reporting currently classified information.
..
Don't buy it. Why would anyone risk their security clearance and career for a fluff story like that? Cheers, SD
