CTO
I read a story about the late Princess who's maid would go and order Som Tam Poo (Is that how you order with crab?) The crabs are often months old - pickled - so imagine any liver fluke long dead but given other dietary practice no doubt they get them a lot. The maid fearful of poisoning Princess would wash the crab herself before handing back to the vendor to make Som Tam. Kinda nice story I thought. drogon
With crab... Som tam poo palaa krap...(as an approximation of Thai to English transliteration) Me I always order Som Tam...when in good health pheet mak mak krap..when not, mai phet krap. Now for sure, I will never try with the crab no matter what my missus tells me...
preahko
the version with fermented fish sauce (plaa raa) and crab is the Lao version, way spicier than the Thai version. The Thais also put disgusting things (IMO) in their som tam like sugar and peanuts, whereas the Lao (Isaan) don't. I can't eat crab, I'm allergic, but I always get the Lao version with plaa raa, mmmmm.
