Vote buying is a reality.

Seems our Tambon counts 7 moo baan's.

It all looks to an average sized village to me, around 200 houses?

Since weeks I hear talks of election for the vilalge heads (pooyabaan).

Wife went to spent many evenings socialising/supporting what she hopes will become the next pooyabaan. Brings some color in the boring village life.

We live 1 km outside the village and last night the neighbouring dogs were barking at 1.30.

I was dreaming arriving at some airport where the idiot customs where checking every passenger, even this one who did not carry any luggage.

Anyway got up to look up the street to see some people with flash lights leaving neigbouring houses, thus the dogs having good reasons to warn the sleeping folks.

Wife said probably people handing over money to buy votes. What!!! at 01.30????

Reply: it better be done in the dark.

Then today at 08.00, ding dong, some people visiting our house. When they leave wife has this devilish smile on her face and shows 200B :stirthepo

"OK, need to shower and go vote now"

Thus I am alone for some hours to come :_party:

Maybe the election for the TAO (Tambon Administration Organization) which has pretty much superseded the kamnan and the phuyaiban positions as far as power, mainly because it controls the money.

The TAO is the link from the central government, particularly the ministry of interior, and it decides how the money is spent. The budget of the some TAO can run to many millions of baht. Note that when the PPP speaker of the house was convicted of corruption, it was a group of TAOâ??s members he was video taped giving money to.

Here is a paper written prior to the rise of the TRT which besides giving an interesting history of the TAOâ??s raises some issues that in todayâ??s world are rather perceptive.

TAO

I hope she still voted for the candidate of her choice and informed authorities regarding the bribe.

I don't think that will happen :nono:

The people who came to ring our bell told us they where scared to wake up a farang in the middle of the night, therefore passed by our house that night :susel:

Seems the man in question won with 7 votes more than the next woman with 196 votes, total votes for the village 456, 3 candidates.

Was told a cow was slaughtered last night.

A man living 3 houses away just brought 3.624kgs of meat, guess this is bribe also then.

Tomorrow Saturday big village party with morlam singers. Drunken fighters probable, will report after the party :drunk:
