Apology accepted, though you are still calling me ignorant and hypocritical !

Maybe you should do some research into Yaa Baa yourself , what it is and the effect it is having on Thai society. You may find then that you dont make such a close comparison between yaa baa, cigarettes and alcohol.

Maybe at the same time check on what effect yaa baa mixed with viagra and alcohol has.

Hansum,

I am not taking offense but, I feel like your still branding me ignorant. An ignorant statement must have an author ( in this case me ) and being hypocritical implies I am critical of certain behaviour yet do it myself, I dont take yaa baa. Your definition of reckless and mine are also somewhat different. I partake of some of the activities on your list but I wouldnt exactly call my behaviour reckless nor dangerous. Recklessness means paying no heed to the dangers of an activity, I try to exercise some care in activities of the type you list. At least I quit smoking !

I am aware of the problems alcohol causes in thai society. Anyone who has spent some time there, especially in poorer areas, sees first hand the problems caused by alcohol on a daily basis. Maybe this is one of those ravaged cultures "DB sed" was talking about of whom alcohol was never a tradition . Yaa baa is also not a tradition in Thailand and at the moment it is causing major problems. Most estimates are that 6% of the pop.use yaa baa, even higher for young people. Hospitals and rehabs report kids as young as 11 -12 attending treatment programs for their addiction. In thai schools yaa baa is becoming so prevalent they now take urine samples of kids to test for yaa baa use.

As for yaa baa combined with alcohol, I dont think anyone would despute this is a unhealthy combination and regular use would lead to problems. Many of the dramatic cases that appear in the thai press and TV (virtually every day ) of people jumping of bldgs murdering their chidren etc etc, that are attributed to yaa baa involve yaa baa and alcohol used together.

As for the negative effect viagra used on top of these two would have I admit I have no evidence nor experience but I'm sure it wouldnt help !

As I have said over the years I have known more than a few farangs who have come unstuck through yaa baa, alcohol and other drug use in thailand, in some cases quite dramatically.

Some interesting articles on thai youth and yaa baa

"Your definition of reckless and mine are also somewhat different. I partake of some of the activities on your list but I wouldnt exactly call my behaviour reckless nor dangerous."

i agree with you that is where the important difference of opinion lies

u don't mention which of my high risk activities that u indulge in so difficult 4 me 2 comment. However I do think that your apparent view (which is a commonly held one) on relative recklessness/dangerousness is somewhat illogical and hypocritical

let me assume (for arguments sake) that u eat a high fat diet, have a family and live in a western european country which has at least a partially socialised healthcare system - your dietary behaviour is both reckless and dangerous - you put yourself at great personal risk of 1)severe illness (MI, CVA, diabetes, IHD, BP etc, etc) or 2)death (MI, CVA, BP etc etc)

in case 1) society also pays by way of opportunity costs, healthcare resources, loss of a productive member of society etc, (if in the UK your expensive treatment for medications, hospital/ITU treatment would divert resources away from other seriously ill people/push up waiting lists)

in case 2) your friends/family/loved ones pay in emotional currency and your dependents lose their breadwinner

you might say thats a rather specious argument but I'd disagree - every word of it is true - similar reasoning could be applied to any of my other high risk behaviours (sexual promiscuity, smoking, speeding, alcohol etc)

you mention u know more than 1 guy thats come unstuck on yaba ..well I've seen literally hundreds if not thousands of patients come unstuck on fat food, smoking, speeding, alcohol

i'm not complaining - i eat a very high fat diet and freely admit to having many many reckless/dangerous personal habits/patterns of behaviour - bearing that in mind, i wouldn't then go on to criticise another persons similarly reckless behaviour in the form of yaba taking (in fact i probably would - but then i would at least admit to the hypocrisy of my views)

at least we can agree to disagree anyway

I'd be happy 2 buy u a drink if we ever meet in los

cheers

"...equally reckless activities - smoking, getting drunk, eating a high fat diet, driving too fast, sleeping with prostitutes"

IMO, yaa baa is in the same class as crack cocaine, and it is far worse the risks you cite here. It is extremely addictive, extremely quickly, and anyone who messes with it is playing Russian roulette with five bullets. Yaa baa is easily one of the fastest routes to one's demise.

I agree, once in a while they are good fun, I don't now but I have smoked it.

I found that it greatly, greatly enhanced the sex, however before I knew it 40 hours had passed, thats what it does to you.

You also end up spending a load of money, as you keep sending people out to purchase more.

I have also known a couple of girls who have been pretty much ruined by it, however it could be argued that they would have got in a mess with something else.

I wouldnt touch it now though, but I'm glad I have done it, if you understand that.

"Likewise, it is great, I've found that 80% of the BG's are in to it, or at least appear to be, have you found this as well. "

80%!! In what venues? I hada meth addicted gf in the states before, and dabbled with the shit for about a year myself, and I've spend 9 months in Pattaya over the last few years. I'd be very surprized if that figure were even 20% in the beer-bars. (Striking correlation beween smokers and ya-ba users I've noticed though)

Man, why all the flack about this guys lifestyle? If he wants to party hard, why shouldn't he, especially if it's just for a week or so.

captagon is an amphtamine. Very taboo these days. Forget about getting uppers in a Thai pharmacy. They can't even sell pure pseudoephedrine (decongestant) tablets anymore, while in the US you can. Have to buy in a 'cold tablet' mixed with a (sedating) anti-histamine.

Red bull etc, have caffiene, b-vitamins, and some neuro-transmitter precursors that are supposed to boost mental function. Basically just a big shot of caffiene.

"about 60% of bargirls and other sex workers use yaa baa"

i've only ever met 1 BG that admitted to taking it, obviously many would hide the fact but even so, I'd bet my life that the figure is nowhere near as high as 60% (in pattaya anyway)
