USVirgin
I had to beat Shygye to this. A real bummer...just watched a re-run of Naked Gun 33 1/3 : The Final Insult the other day and I'm still laughing. Sorry, but Leslie Nielsen transcends the USA only thread. Bangkoktraveler
Leslie played General Francis Marion in the “The Swamp Fox†series based on the American Revolutionary War produced by Disney that ran from 1959 to 1961.
Flashermac
Remember it well ... Nielsen's big break after the "Forbidden Planet". "Swamp Fox, Swamp Fox, tail on his hat Nobody knows where the Swamp Fox at. Swamp Fox, Swamp Fox, ridin' through the glen. He rides away to fight again." Typical Disney drivel. Francis Marion was a well educated Huguenot South Carolina planter whose family spoke French at home. He would have spoken English with a posh Tidewater accent, not Nielsen's eastern Canuck. Also, Disney's Brits kindly refered to Marion and his men as Americans - not Rebels as they really did. Not surprising though, since Washington and Jefferson also had Tidewater accents but are always made in films or TV to sound as if they came from Cleveland or Detroit. p.s. Disney's Brits usually sounded decidedly American too!
