radioman Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 So who 'owns' the land that various embassies occupy?
Flashermac Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 It supposedly belongs to the nation whose embassy is on it. In the 19th century the Thai monarch gave land to the foreign embassies. There weren't many and very few are at the same location. (This obviously doesn't work for embassies that rent space in large buildings.)
gobbledonk Posted April 27, 2011 Author Report Posted April 27, 2011 They ran an episode of 'Spooks' recently where people kept running in and out of the Chinese Embassy in London and our MI5 friends couldnt touch them - similar plot devices have been used in everything from JAG to various Hollywood movies. Its an intriguing idea that you are on 'American soil' as soon as the Marine lets you through the gates - probably not so alluring for Julian Assange, tho .....
bust Posted April 27, 2011 Report Posted April 27, 2011 And it is about to have a major security upgrade. All Oz embassies were listed for upgrade after the Jakarta bombing. Upgrade ? Short of stripping everyone naked at the gate' date=' I'm not sure what else they could do. Other than the gardeners, and the odd VIP at various functions, I'm not sure exactly who gets to wander unhindered through the manicured grounds - the Ambassador ? KRUDD ? Probably not the PM, given her rather difficult relationship with Kev. [/quote'] More of a facilities and structure upgrade than operations
