Some Pheu Thai Party members are sceptical that Yingluck Shinawatra is the right choice as the party's candidate for prime minister, say sources.

They doubt that the youngest sister of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is really a smart choice for an election that is crucial for the opposition party.

Pheu Thai is scheduled to endorse its candidate for prime minister on Monday and Ms Yingluck is widely speculated to be favourite to win the nomination.

The party has appeared to be struggling to find its No.1 candidate on the party list amid reports that some members would prefer someone who is not so close to the former premier.

According to a source, several members look at the party's most likely choice with a heavy heart, especially as she will be challenging Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva.

"There are 50 days to go until the polls and there's not enough time to turn her into Mr Abhisit's contender," said the source.

Former executives of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party who are helping Pheu Thai's election strategy have voiced similar concerns.

"The July 3 general election is too much for a political novice like Ms Yingluck," said one.

However, there are those who see potential in Ms Yingluck. Since the dissolution of the People Power Party, she has stepped in to manage the party's finances and won praise for her work.

She is said to be the most successful Shinawatra after Thaksin when it comes to political affairs, surpassing Yaowapa Wongsawat and Phayap Shinawatra, Thaksin's younger sister and younger brother.

These people are confident that she will be able to perform and lead the country if Pheu Thai wins a mandate to form a government.

Ms Yingluck will be able to draw support from veterans when a political ban on 111 former executives of Thai Rak Thai is lifted in May next year.

"If the party wins, her situation is even better than that of Somchai Wongsawat, who faced strong opposition from the yellow shirts. Ms Yingluck can count on support from the red shirts," said the source.

A Shin Corp source, who used to be on Thaksin's advisory team, said the former prime minister has no better choice.

The cream of his crap have been banned from politics in the two party dissolution cases - 111 from Thai Rak Thai and another 39 from People Power.

Thai Rak Thai was dissolved and executives banned for five years by the Constitution Court on May 5, 2007, on charges of collusion with other small parties in the election a year earlier.

People Power was disbanded on Dec 2, 2008, when the Constitution Court ruled it had committed fraud in another poll on Dec 23, 2007.

"If some 150 Democrat politicians were banned, the one who ranks 151st could not compete with Yingluck," said the source.

According to the source, Thaksin's sister is working hard to elevate herself to the status of potential prime minister.

Chalerm Yubamrung, a potential candidate on the party list for Pheu Thai, said that Ms Yingluck is full of potential and has a strong knowledge of economic affairs. He cannot see why Thaksin's sister cannot compete against Mr Abhisit.

Meanwhile, Pracharaj leader Sanoh Thienthong has agreed to join Pheu Thai, bringing with him his three children - Sorawong, Treenut and Thanit.

Mr Sanoh said yesterday that he had decided to join the Pheu Thai Party because he wanted to lift the country out of its political crisis which had crippled it for the past five years.
