PP
Can anyone comment on the current status of the Tai Pan Hotel on Sukhumvit 23. Is it Guest Friendly or do they want a Joiner Fee? A mate tells me it used to be his regular Bangkok Hotel as it's right by Cowboy and he had no problems until one time they tried to charge him a JF so he's never been back. maybe a one off with someone trying it on for a little tea money or is it hotel policy now? TroyinEwa/Perv
As far as I remember, they've charged a joiner fee as long as I've been going, first trip was in 1995. Doubt it's changed but I don't know for a fact.
The_Munchmaster
All I can tell you about the Tai Pan is that it had (back in the 90's) a hairdressing salon on the ground floor (left side of entrance) owned by a guy from Hong Kong called John and his senior stylist, Khun Porn, was absolutely gorgeous . My office was very close by and she cut my hair for years and many more times than it needed to be cut. PS. Although I've never stayed there I have heard people mention that it charged a JF, however that was years ago so may have changed.

I stayed there on my first trip. Had booked a room for two persons and told them that my girl friend would join me later. Since I spent most nights with the same BG it wasn't a problem. Nevertheless they didn't seem to like hotel guests bringing BG's and I never went back. This was around 2004. Since then I have never read a recommendation by other board members staying there, therefore I presume Tai Pan didn't become guest friendly in the recent years. The Taipan hotel is now guest friendly. Selling well these days. Tim
PP
I found their email address and asked them if they charge a Joiner Fee and they replied yes, 600 Baht per person per night, excluding bed and meal!!!! Sort of makes you wonder what the extra charge is for then??? So now looking for an alternative. Anyone know anything about Asoke Residence? GF or JF? and does it have a car park? Edit: What about Swutel just around the corner?
Specialist
Royal President on Suk Soi 15 is GF and quite well-run. I've stayed there twice, most recently not quite a year ago.
kamui
Royal President on Suk Soi 15 is GF and quite well-run. I've stayed there twice, most recently not quite a year ago. The Darjelling is nice as well. It's just 200 m away from SC, across Sukhumivt road. Stayed there two times last year. Nicely furnished rooms. TV with DVD player. Bathroom has a large glass window to the bed room (which can be closed with a window blind). Restaurant (2-3 small tables) and the pool are tiny. Since I never use hotel pools it didn't matter to me, and for breakfast the restaurant was a ok.
Ryder
The Tai Pan Hotel is distinctly recognisable from Sukhumvit Road at Asoke. Built in the 1970s it’s one of the Vietnam War Era Hotels that sprang up in Bangkok during those heady times. Just off Sukhumvit Road on Soi 23 it’s within easy walking distance of Soi Cowboy, Terminal 21 and Robinson Department Store. Nowadays newer skyscrapers tower above it but it still has a presence in the small soi it now dominates. Inside the Hotel a reception lobby greets you. The first thing I noticed about the hotel reception is that it’s wheelchair-friendly. As to the left of the polished tiled steps a carpeted-ramp leads you down. The reception folk are cordial but polite. Free WiFi is available in all the Hotel according to the staff. Two lifts run up and down the sixteen floors. The standard room we saw was clean, presentable. The bathroom was a somewhat small, the bed soft but lacking in firmness. A passable window view of the nearby skyscrapers was ok. Fridge with minibar plus TV is what you get. Plus Aircon of course (non-remote). A safety deposit box is in a wardrobe should you wish to use it. Outside the Hotel several massage shops face the entrance ramp. Full Review below: Tai Pan Hotel
